Microsoft patents tech that watches viewers

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 07 November 2012 | 19.51

A patent application by Microsoft for "Content Distribution Regulation by Viewing User" has surfaced. The filing, which was made with the US Patent and Trademark Office on April 26, 2011, and was spotted by Eurogamer, outlines a system designed to monitor viewers as they watch; ensuring compliance with licensing for music, games, and film.

The technology works by using cameras (no explicit mention is made of the Kinect or a Kinect successor) found in home and mobile devices to take still or moving images of the consumers and their environment. The system then compares the number of viewers visible in the frame with the licensing terms attached to the product; prompting watchers to purchase additional licenses (as required) for each person watching.

Excerpts from the application are listed below, while the full version can be read on the USPTO website. Warning: contains legalise.

"Consumers are presented with a content selection and a choice of licenses allowing consumption of the content. The users consuming the content on a display device are monitored so that if the number of user-views licensed is exceeded, remedial action may be taken."

"Content is distributed to consuming devices, such as televisions, set-top boxes, and digital displays, with an associated license option on the number of individual consumers or viewers allowed to consume the content. The limitation may comprise a number of user views, a number of user views over time, a number of simultaneous user views, views tied to user identities, views limited to user age, or any variation or combination thereof, all tied to the number of actual content consumers allowed to view the content."

The patent covers home and mobile digital content, both streamed and downloaded to a device, as well as various types of physical storage. Failure to acquire the additional licenses required for multiple viewers when prompted will result in the content stream or playback stopping.

"…a license validation is performed by comparing the user count and any view or performance limitation against that allowed by the license. If the license is satisfied, the content presentation begins. If not, then the user is presented with an option to adjust the license terms. If the license is updated, then the content presentation begins. If not, the presentation is halted."

The patent filing also makes numerous mentions of at least one type of head-mounted display. These match those found in the purportedly leaked (now taken down) Xbox 720 documents from June this year, which showed concept drawings of players wearing armbands and glasses while playing.

"Head mounted display device 502, which in one embodiment is in the shape of glasses, is worn on the head of a user so that the user can see through a display, and thereby have an actual direct view of the space in front of the user. The use of the term 'actual and direct view' refers to the ability to see the real world objects directly with the human eye, rather than seeing created image representations of the objects. For example, looking through glass at a room allows a user to have an actual direct view of the room, while viewing a video of a room on a television is not an actual direct view of the room."

"In one embodiment, processing unit 504 is worn on the user's wrist and includes much of the computing power used to operate [the] head mounted display device…"

"A head mounted display device 502, may include microphone and/or camera 5110 for recording sounds and transmitting that audio data to [a] processing unit."

As a technology patent, the document doesn't disclose any specific devices or services, but may provide a glimpse into the direction of Microsoft's next generation console, as well as how users may be required to engage with games and entertainment.

GameSpot contacted Microsoft, but the publisher was unable to provide comment at time of publication.

New Uncharted game ‘Fight for Fortune‘ revealed

Uncharted: Fight for Fortune has been listed on the Australian Classification Board's website; developer One Loop Games is attached.

A posting on the Australian Classification Board's website has revealed a new Uncharted game. Titled Uncharted: Fight for Fortune, the entry lists the game with a "G" General rating, and as being a "multi-platform" title.

Additionally, the listing cites developer One Loop Games as the author. The organisation's website reveals that the studio recently completed two secret projects, one of which is their "first big game".

Previous projects from the developer include Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Full Spectrum Warrior, and The Saboteur.

The well-received action-adventure Uncharted series released its latest instalment in the form of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, which was released in November 2011. A spin-off game, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, was released for the PlayStation Vita earlier this year as a launch title for the handheld console.

Historical Travelogue – Assassin–s Creed III

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 06 November 2012 | 19.51

Not bad!  Occupy is a topic? Dumbfounding, but --nice try

It's a shame that AC3 focused on Boston and New York, because Phili was the true hub of the patriots, it was the largest and most important city among the Colonies.  The game is actually pretty bad historically speaking.  The portrayal of the Boston Tea party is shame, shame, shameful!  I would have rather struck down James Otis with a bolt of lightening.  I'm glad the series has ended, I can't stand to see a good game humiliate itself, and AC3 is the worst.  They should have stopped when Ezio killed Savonarola, everything after that was just jumping sharks.

Now Ending: Halo 4

This video is meant for people who don't intend to play the game. I don't play Halo games, they are FPS's and I don't like FPS's. Besides it is set in space, which is not my kind of environment for playing game. However, it is nice to see the ending of the games, or better of, the story of the series. Just because I don't play it, doesn't mean I'm not going to get into the story.

Watch the Pros Take on Halo 4 Multiplayer

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 02 November 2012 | 19.51

The one thing that is kind of annoying so far about the video is that Tom is very wrong about some of the things he said.

He says how he doesnt like that there are download stuff not in the game already and that you shouldnt have to pay more online. And how he believes that the game should have at least 10-15 mp levels.

-There are 10 Multiplayer maps and several forge made map variants.

-All the content is on the game, Spartan ops will be downloaded per week but is FREE for at least the first season

-Extra maps wont be coming for several months.

PlayStation 4 dev kits shipping to developers ø Report

While Sony has remained silent on the next iteration of its home console, details are beginning to emerge, with sources close to VG24/7 reporting that Sony is beginning to share its plans and specs for the PlayStation 4 with key partners.

The electronics giant is believed to be currently conducting briefing sessions with select US software developers on the capabilities of the PlayStation 4, which is being referred to only by its codename: Orbis. Some game publishers are believed to be taking delivery of an enhanced version of the console's development kit now, with version one understood to have been little more than a graphics card. The current "modified PC" update, and January's upcoming third refresh, is believed to be indicative of the final specs, before the unit is provided "next summer" (in the US), ahead of a predicted pre-E3 reveal of the device to the public.

Sources went on to disclose that the console will be powered by AMD's A10 APU, a combination CPU and GPU single chip, with dev kits featuring either 8GB or 16GB of RAM, a Blu-ray optical drive, and a 256GB hard-disk drive. Ethernet, HDMI, and Wi-Fi functionality are all believed to be making the jump from the PS3 to its successor.

Sony is also reportedly briefing developers on some of its intentions for the device, with suggestions that the user interface on the next PlayStation will be overhauled, and that activating the PS button on the controller mid-game will allow users to explore any part of the system, including the PlayStation Store to buy DLC without the need to leave the active session.

While no pricing details are known, tipsters confirmed that Sony's approach with its next console is to offer something "very affordable" but "isn't a slouch".

GameSpot contacted Sony Computer Entertainment, which declined to comment on the rumours.

An analyst report had predicted that both Sony and Microsoft will have their respective future-generation consoles on store shelves by the end of next year. Sony's PS4 is rumoured to boast the same graphics card as Microsoft's next Xbox.

Video Review - Halo 4

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 01 November 2012 | 19.51

10.0: Prime

This exceedingly rare score refers to a game that is as perfect as a game can aspire to be at its time of release. Obviously, the constantly changing standards for technology and gameplay will probably make this game obsolete some day, but at its time of release, a game earning this score could not have been improved upon in any meaningful way.

9.0-9.5: Superb

We absolutely recommend any game in this range, especially to fans of that particular genre. However, games that score in the 9 range are also typically well suited to new players.

Sons of Anarchy game 'dead'

The Sons of Anarchy game has screeched to a halt. Show creator Kurt Sutter said on Twitter today that he is no longer trying to bring a game based on the FX biker drama to market.

"I'm done," he said. "No interest from industry, little support from Fox. It B dead."

Just yesterday, Sutter reached out to Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption studio Rockstar Games to see if the company was interested in making the Sons of Anarchy game. Sutter asked the company to call him regarding a potential partnership, though it is not clear if any discussion between the two parties ever took place.

The Sons of Anarchy game has gone from new idea to its grave in just nine months. Sutter first teased a tie-in in February, when he stated a browser-based game was possible. Then in May, he confirmed larger plans for the game after meeting with a mystery distributor, saying the project would be a "real" title for consoles that may take a while to create.

Less encouraging news on the Sons of Anarchy game came in August, when Sutter claimed a major publisher dismissed the project, and added that the game may never come to market.

Sons of Anarchy is an FX television show in its fifth season that focuses on a closely knit group of motorcycle outlaws. It is set in the fictional town of Charming, California, and stars Charlie Hunnam (Green Street Hooligans) as the show's protagonist Jackson "Jax" Teller. Sons of Anarchy also features Katey Sagal (Married with Children, Futurama) and Ron Perlman (Fallout: New Vegas, Hellboy).

FIFA and Battlefield are EA's most profitable franchises

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 31 Oktober 2012 | 19.51

EA has revealed that its digital revenue has grown by 40 percent in its second fiscal quarter since the same period last year, thanks in large part to the content downloads offered for FIFA 13, Madden NFL 13, and Battlefield 3.

This week, the publisher posted its preliminary financial results for the second fiscal quarter ending September 30, 2012, in which EA president Frank Gibeau highlighted the company's strong digital growth and pointed to FIFA and Battlefield as EA's most profitable franchises.

"On the strength of our digital extensions, FIFA and Battlefield are the two biggest revenue events in our company's history," Gibeau said. "Both are well on their way to becoming billion dollar annual franchises."

The publisher also praised the performance of its sports titles, with EA CFO Blake Jorgensen revealing that the company is forecasting an annual growth of at least 25 percent with net revenues expected to reach approximately $4 billion by March 31, 2013.

According to the report, FIFA 13 and Madden NFL 13 debuted as the two top-selling titles in September in the West. In its first four weeks, FIFA 13 sold 7.4 million units, excluding mobile downloads, a number that EA said makes the title "the biggest sports launch of all time." FIFA's digital revenue also generated over $115 million in the first half of fiscal 2013, including FIFA Online 2 and FIFA World Class Soccer.

EA's Battlefield 3 Premium service has sold over 2 million subscriptions to date, according to the publisher, and in the mobile space, The Simpsons: Tapped Out has reportedly become the top-grossing iOS game for the past four weeks, logging 2.8 million daily active users.

Other parts of the report revealed that EA's games and services for mobile have generated a 60 percent year-over-year increase in digital net revenue, while EA's Origin platform has registered over 30 million users, including 13 million mobile users. EA also revealed that Origin has signed agreements with 71 independent developers.
