New Nintendo hardware to be unveiled at E3 2014, say reports

Hail Hydra!

A new report on VideoGamer has said Nintendo will unveil new hardware at E3 2014.

Citing a "third-party publishing source" that also claims new games will accompany the hardware, and be playable at the show, VideoGamer then suggests that the hardware reveal will be a successor to the Wii U.

Peer Schneider at IGN has also suggested Nintendo has some new hardware up its sleeve. "I've heard it from multiple people now," he said on a recent Nintendo Voice Chat podcast. "I've heard it from someone who used to be at Nintendo, I've heard it from somebody on the third-party front."

Schneider, however, notes that hardware is a broad term that could mean anything from a simple peripheral to a new Nintendo console.

MCV, too, says it's heard that Nintendo has new hardware to unveil but, like Schneider, is not yet certain what it could be.

Nintendo, meanwhile, said it does not comment on rumour or speculation. The company will release all its E3 announcements at 09:00 PT on Tuesday, June 10.

Xbox One's controversial parity policy criticized by Stealth Inc. developer

The UK developer behind recently unveiled Wii U exclusive Stealth Inc. 2, Curve Studios, has called Microsoft's launch parity clause--which only lets indie developers release games on Xbox One if they haven't already launched for PS4, PC, or Wii U--an "annoyance" and a "shame".

"For us, it's an annoyance," said Curve Studios marketing manager Rob Clarke in an interview with IGN. "It's preventing us from bringing some of the older stuff through and doing what we want. There's 40 of us, and we're still saying we should be able to work around it, so you can imagine how hard it is for smaller developers in one and two man teams who are faced with having to release on PlayStation and Xbox simultaneously. "

Clarke adds that Curve Studios is hopeful about being on Xbox One at some stage. "We've been with ID@Xbox since launch," he adds. "We weren't in the initial announcement only because it conflicted with something going on with Sony at the time. We've had the kits for a long time and we've been talking to them for a long time about Xbox One. Almost six months. Hopefully we'll get there soon, but then that's because we're big enough to handle the launch parity thing."

Microsoft's launch parity clause has attracted its fair share of criticism from, well, pretty much everybody. "Hopefully Microsoft will drop it," says Clarke. "They've been told by a lot of the industry it'd be better if they did, but they haven't yet. It's a shame. The frustrating thing for a lot of developers is they have dropped it for a lot of people, but it's not very clear why. Is it a case of size? Is it a case of how well you know people at the company? It's not a great way to treat indies because they see it as being unbalanced. I went to a UKIE [trade association] talk about how to get your game on Microsoft systems, and a lot of the reaction seemed to be the demand was there among the developers, but it just isn't clear."

Microsoft has said that the launch parity clause is considered on a case-by-case basis, but that it will continue in the future. "The winners in all of this are game players," said Microsoft exec Phil Harrison about both Microsoft and Sony's attempts to lure indie developers to their fancy new consoles.

UK PS4 owners will get Sky Go and Now TV apps from this summer

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 01 Mei 2014 | 19.51

Look it's the chap from the Now TV advert! Throw that £9.99 box out the window and get a PS4!

UK broadcaster Sky has announced it will be bringing Now TV and Sky Go apps to the PlayStation 4.

Now TV will be available from summer, thanks to a new agreement between Sky and Sony Computer Entertainment UK. Now TV is a contract-free streaming service that allows pay-as-you-go access to Sky Movies, Sky Sports, and some of the shows on Sky One and Sky Atlantic. Now TV has been available on PS3 since last year.

Sky Go, on the other hand, allows active Sky subscribers a chance to watch additional content on demand. The app, formerly known as Sky Player, will be a first for a Sony platform. It was released for Xbox 360, but has never been announced on Xbox One.

Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Fergal Gara was, as you might expect, delighted. "Now TV has been a great addition to the PlayStation 3 entertainment portfolio," he said in a statement, "so bringing it to the new PS4 is going to delight all users of the newest, most powerful member of the PlayStation family."

"Sky Go joining both PlayStation platforms further enhances our credentials as the ultimate gaming and entertainment package," Gara, who never misses an opportunity, added.

Transformers Universe founders packs unveiled, the most expensive costs $500

Jagex's multiplayer action title Transformers Universe has unveiled its founders program, allowing punters to part with their cash for premium access to the free-to-play game alongside a suite of in-game gear.

There are four tiers of pack to choose from, bronze, silver, gold, and cybernite. All founders program buyers get their names added to an honour roll, and are given a custom avatar and title befitting their level of purchase.

Bronze is the cheapest, priced £29.99 (roughly $50), and includes a 60 day season pass (which deposits new items into your account every month) and £20 worth of in-game currency.

On the other end of the scale is the cybernite pack, which comes in at a staggering £299.99 (approximately $500). Jagex says the packs are competitively priced, and that purchasing the cybernite pack content individually would cost over £480. What do you get, then? Six exclusive, a handful of bodykits, £160 worth of in-game currency, an additional 18 warriors, a whole bevy of in-game items, a 12 month season pass, and an exclusive 50cm limited edition figurine.

Transformers Universe is expected to launch for PC this summer. Those interested can now go and tap their credit card details into the game's official site.

Ubisoft on Watch Dogs delay -- "We had no choice"

In a new interview, Ubisoft marketing executive Tony Key recalls the publisher's decision to delay its high-profile open-world game Watch Dogs and explains what impact it had on the company. The delay caused financial hardship for Ubisoft, but it was the only possible course of action, Key says.

"This is not an easy decision to make for any company. On the day we announced that, I think our stock dropped 40 percent or some ridiculous number," Key told the [a]list daily. "We've recovered since because people are seeing the rest of our lineup and it turns out maybe it was a good idea."

"We had no choice. We knew it was the right thing to do, but it doesn't make it hurt any less" -- Ubisoft's Tony Key on the Watch Dogs delay

"We had no choice, despite the fact that it put us in a tough financial position in the short term. We're a long-term company, with a long-term vision, and Watch Dogs for us is a long-term play," he added. "We had no choice. We knew it was the right thing to do, but it doesn't make it hurt any less."

Key went on to say that games have their own unique sets of challenges, because they are a mix between technology and art. Compounding this is the fact that Watch Dogs is an all-new brand running on new technology--the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Ubisoft's other tentpole franchise, Assassin's Creed, has been annualized since 2009, so the publisher has experience bringing this product to market every fall. The same can't be said for Watch Dogs.

"The Assassin's Creed team has gotten so much experience now in working on a schedule that they've found that delicate balance of being able to put their heart and soul into the game and still making a schedule work," Key said. "But a new brand, as you've seen time and time again from publishers everywhere, it's very difficult to make that work."

Watch Dogs' delay came just one month before its then-release date of November 18. Delaying the title this late in the game led to numerous marketing challenges, Key said.

"The decision was made very late, and we were rolling along in a lot of areas on the marketing side. Any time a game slips, there are marketing inefficiencies," Key said. "We are still executing, for the most part, the plan that we had had. It was a lot of late nights and crazy reactions to putting everything on hold at the last minute. It's the least of our problems to put marketing on hold, compared to getting the game right, but it's a lot of work for a marketing team when something like that moves. You have to reallocate all your resources on a new schedule, you've got your retailers to deal with, who are already running marketing for your game in some cases. Slips like that are incredibly inefficient."

Had Watch Dogs met its original November 2013 date, the game's Xbox One and PS4 versions would have benefited from the buzz of the new consoles, Key said. But at the same time, the extra six months has also meant that more people have become aware of the game, and this is evidenced in the fact that preorders are up, Key said.

Watch Dogs launches May 27 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PS4, and PC. The Wii U version is coming sometime later. For more on Watch Dogs, be sure to read our previous coverage.
