Destiny, the New Fragrance by Xbox

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 05 September 2014 | 19.51

That headline goes from good to great when you imagine it being said in the seductive hush of a Calvin Klein advert.

It's genuine, by the way. Well, genuine in the sense that this is a real Microsoft advert, which has been linked to by its official Twitter account.

Not genuine, of course, in the sense that Microsoft hasn't started manufacturing eau de toilette (though, trust me, if you ever go to Gamescom when it's open to the public, you'll will wish they did).

So, er, why exactly is Microsoft advertising Destiny, the New Fragrance by Xbox?

Well, in the UK Microsoft is not allowed to advertise the game for Xbox One, due to an agreement between Activision and Sony.

On the Fragrance advert's website you'll notice a message explaining:

"Okay, so here's the lowdown. Destiny is actually an epic new first-person shooter, available on Xbox. Thing is, we didn't have permission to run adverts for the game. So we didn't."

Such a restriction caused a stink (sorry. Not sorry) within Microsoft's marketing department, and quite clearly has brought out the best in them. Well done all.

Destiny launches September 9 on Xbox 360, Xbox One, and I think it's available on other platforms too. Not sure.

Fable Anniversary PC Release Date Announced

Fable Anniversary, Liohead's HD remake of its Xbox classic, will ship on Steam on September 12.

To mark the game's release on PC, publisher Microsoft is offering a twenty percent discount for a limited time. The regular price in North America is $35, reduced to $28 for those that preorder before the game becomes available.

In the UK the game costs £27, reduced to £21.59 for those who preorder.

Initially released on Xbox 360, Fable Anniversary is a HD remaster of the 2004 Xbox original with updated visuals and audio. It also comes with the Lost Chapters bonus content, and an extra-challenging Heroic difficulty.

GameSpot's Fable Anniversary review was generally favourable, with critic Kevin VanOrd writing: "Its combat and world design have undoubtedly aged, but the game is so ripe with charisma, so upbeat that even its most sombre moments don't suppress your soaring spirits for long."

He concluded: "Fable isn't quite timeless, but its genial mood is infectious, and I'm happy that Fable Anniversary kept my fond memories intact."

500GB Xbox 360 Arriving In October, Includes Two Call of Duty Games for $250 - Report

A special edition 500GB Xbox 360 bundle that includes a blue console, blue controller, and copies of Call of Duty: Ghosts and Call of Duty: Black Ops II will launch on October 7. That's according to a Wal-Mart ad scan posted in the Blu-ray forums.

The bundle will reportedly be exclusive to Wal-Mart. We have reached out to Microsoft for more details about the bundle, and will update this post with anything we hear back.

The special edition Xbox 360 bundle wouldn't the first console made available exclusively at Wal-Mart. Just last week, Nintendo announced that Wal-Mart will be the exclusive retailer for a new Wii U system bundle that includes a copy of juggernaut racing game Mario Kart 8.

The Xbox 360 currently comes in 4GB and 250GB options. If the 500GB system is indeed real, it would be the first time Microsoft offered the console with a hard drive of that size. Just last month, however, Microsoft started selling 500GB hard drives for $110.

The Xbox One, of course, has a built-in 500GB hard drive. In November, Microsoft will release a 1TB Xbox One console in a bundle with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

Bungie Holding Public Destiny Launch Party Next Week

To mark the release of Destiny, developer Bungie is opening its doors to fans for a special one-day community celebration where anyone can get a tour of the studio, talk with developers, and even challenge them in multiplayer. The studio has even put together a slick video (above) to hype the event.

"The launch of Destiny is imminent. For years, we've been dreaming of a world where you would be a unique hero. As those dreams become a reality, we'd love to celebrate with you," Bungie writes on its website. "The development of Destiny has been a long journey. So many of you have come along with us for what has been one hell of a ride. At the end of that road, some of you may find what you've been looking for in our studio."

The event kicks off at Bungie's headquarters on Monday, September 9 at 12 noon PDT and runs through 5 PM that day. All are invited, and you're advised to park at the Galleria Garage and take public transportation to Bungie's office, located at 550 106th Ave. in Bellevue, Washington 98004.

Bungie says the first 300 attendees "stand a good chance" of getting a studio tour and having the opportunity to square off against developers in a Destiny multiplayer match. Meanwhile, the first 1,000 in attendance "won't leave empty-handed," Bungie teased.

"This will be a day of celebrating the vivid community that will bring the world of Destiny to life," Bungie said. "Come and pay us a visit before the real party begins."

Destiny launches September 9 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. Retailer GameStop recently announced plans to open 4,100 stores next week for midnight launch celebrations. For more on Destiny, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

EA Hires Starbucks Exec to Bolster Marketing Efforts, Help Company Become "Player-First"

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 03 September 2014 | 19.51

In a bid to bolster its marketing efforts, Battlefield and Mass Effect publisher Electronic Arts has announced the hiring of former Starbucks executive Chris Bruzzo to become its chief marketing officer. EA CEO Andrew Wilson announced the news in a statement posted on the company's website. He says Bruzzo will lead marketing and communications efforts across web and digital platforms, all in the name of helping EA become a "players-first" company.

"Today, EA creates games and live services for players around the world on an ever-expanding range of platforms and unique ways to play," Wilson said. "Partnering with our development and technology teams, Chris will ensure we are delivering personal and meaningful experiences for players every time they connect with us and play an EA game."

Wilson sung Bruzzo's praises, calling him a "brand visionary." Prior to joining Starbucks, where he held various executive-level positions, Bruzzo spent nearly three years at online retail giant Amazon as its director of strategic communications.

"Chris is a great fit for our organization--a collaborator, innovator, and importantly, a gamer," Wilson said. "Chris is just as comfortable sharing stories about his days playing Escape from Rungistan and Ultima back in the early 1980s on his Apple IIE as he is debating tactics in FIFA, Battlefield, or Peggle. I'm thrilled to bring him on board at EA."

Bruzzo has a degree in political studies from Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. In addition to his role as chief marketing officer at EA, Bruzzo currently serves on the board of directors of jewelry retailer Blue Nile.

EA's major marketing campaigns this year, for high-profile games like Madden NFL 15 and NHL 15, have been anything but traditional.
