‪Big In Asia Livestream Replay: Tales of Xillia 2‬

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 07 Februari 2013 | 19.51

It's funny that the guy clearly has absolutely no idea what he's doing even though he's trying to explain it. He's wailing on an enemy resistant to physical weaponry, all the while doing 0 damage. Very rarely he exposes its weakness using a wind attack and begins to do damage, but at no point does he question why he's doing 0 damage. If he had an elemental weapon (he should at this point) or at least used an elemental arte before every attack he made, he would be doing more than 0. The resistances and weaknesses are clearly shown at the top right when he is targeting which enemy to attack, not even in Japanese, so you really would have to have no idea what you're doing to miss it.

In addition, I'm pretty sure the adds in that fight never stop respawning, so there's no reason to kill them. This is all along with completely wasting overlimit mode, etc, etc. I've played through the game (I own it) and enjoyed it, and at this point in the game, this is all common sense, explained to you in Japanese AND you really should've figured it out by now, ESPECIALLY if you supposedly played the first Xillia (hint: it's mostly the same).

Also, for all the people saying we didn't get the first Xillia: we ARE getting it this year.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt announced for 2014

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 05 Februari 2013 | 19.51

By Martin Gaston, Eddie Makuch

Third game in the Witcher series sees Geralt go open-world for all "high-end platforms" in 2014.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been officially announced by Polish developer CD Projekt RED. The game will be released in 2014 and will be coming to PC's as well as all other "high-end platforms".

The main source of inspiration for The Witcher 3 seems to be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, with Geralt's third adventure taking on a more open-world role without acts and chapters.

According to the GameInformer reveal (digested via NeoGAF), the world will be 20 per cent bigger than Skyrim's and will take up to 40 minutes to traverse from one end to the other on horseback. The new version of the proprietary RED engine features new streaming technology designed to minimize load times.

Right now The Witcher 3's visuals are running on an old renderer that will be upgraded before the game is released next year. "Right now you see the game in the old renderer, but it's going to be taken to a truly next level," says gameplay producer Marek Ziemak.

The game's quests and narratives are being designed around an interwoven three-tier structure, with Geralt's personal plot sitting at the top and feeding into the invasion of Nilfgaardian and then into typical quests like monster hunting and crafting.

Monster hunting promises to be far more in-depth this time around, with redesigned enemy AI and a much larger focus on gathering clues and information from townsfolk and books before engaging enemies. Factors like the time of day also affect where monsters will appear and their abilities. You can learn that it is possible to kill a vampire in one hit by stabbing both its hearts simultaneously, for instance.

The game's skill trees, magic signs and inventory will also be tweaked, with CD Projekt RED admitting that many found The Witcher 2's inventory frustrating. Spells can be modified and developed, with Igni now having a new flamethrower effect and also the ability to be transformed into a 360-degree blast.

The Witcher games are based on a famous series of novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and revolve around Geralt of Rivia, a member of the socially maligned but powerful monster-hunting Witchers.

In The Witcher 3, Geralt's memories (he had been suffering amnesia in the first two games) have been resorted. The game's subtitle suggests a confrontation with the band of spectres known as The Wild Hunt, which are presumably responsible for Geralt's amnesia and are also considered an omen of death.

CD Projekt RED also says Geralt's barber will be available from the get-go, but there will be absolutely no chance of dyeing his distinctive silver locks.

The Witcher series has sold more than 4 million copies as of last summer. CD Projekt Red has been teasing The Witcher 3 since 2011, with the latest barrage of speculation coming last month, when the company showed off a teaser image depicting Geralt's sword. For more on the series, check out GameSpot's review of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

The Witcher 3 is not the only new game CD Projekt Red is at work on. The company is also developing Cyberpunk 2077, a new role-playing game set in a "dark future" where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity."

Still think "gaming as a service" is a good idea ? Think again.

In the meantime, us others are playing DRM free, feature complete games anytime and anywhere we want, trouble free which we bought back in the years when games were sold as products or recently from companies without shady business practices.

But please, by all means, enjoy your limited experience and making you fully dependent on a thirf party to allow you access to the product you bought - I'll be laughing just as hard as I was laughing at those that bought Diablo 3 and other "you have to be online to play" games.

Also I hope your bank account is ready for all the full price DLC packs you're going to get shoved down your throat - expect to spend at least 300 EUR to 500 EUR over the course of next year.

Abandoning Tradition to Keep Castlevania Relevant

The man in charge of Castlevania reveals that forging a new path for the series was the only way to keep it alive. "I don't want it to die."

Even the most cherished series needs a kick in the pants from time to time, according to Konami Producer David Cox. He recently sat down with GameSpot to discuss Mirror of Fate, the upcoming side-scrolling Castlevania for the Nintendo 3DS, and why fans of Koji Igarashi's games shouldn't fear the series' new direction. Along with developer Mercury Steam, Cox wants to focus on the origins of the Belmont's curse, and the ramifications it has on their offspring with each passing generation.

There are a lot of 2D Castlevanias out there, and fans have pretty clear expectations. Can you explain some of the core concepts that went into developing Mirror of Fate as a 2D Lords of Shadow game?

I'm probably going to get murdered for saying this, but like we said with Lords of Shadow, forget everything you know about Castlevania, because on the surface, it seems like a traditional 2D side-scrolling Castlevania game, but in many ways it's just a continuation of what we did with Lords of Shadow. If people really enjoyed Lords of Shadow , then they'll love Mirror of Fate. It's really like a squeezed-down version of that game.

Our idea with the series is to tell Dracula's story. Ultimately, that's the overarching storyline. Lords of Shadow is Dracula's beginning, Lords of Shadow 2 will be the ending, and this kind of sits in the middle. The purpose of Mirror of Fate is to explain the blood feud between Dracula and the Belmonts. How did it come about? What drives it? It has always been about going to Dracula's castle, killing Dracula; that has really been it. Dracula has always been a one-dimensional guy who just turns up at the end of the game. We really want to explore that character and explore the motivations of that character. How did he become Dracula? Why has he become Dracula? Why are the Belmonts the ones that have to go after him? That's the kind of story we're trying to tell.

Obviously, with a title like Mirror of Fate, it's about how fate and destiny are intertwined with our actions. You know, Gabriel made the decision to become Dracula because of the events in Lords of Shadow and the DLC. Going down this darker path has consequences on his son Trevor, and the things he does have consequences on his son Simon.

I know that you are a big Castlevania fan. How hard has it been trying to balance the game's identity and trying to keep some familiar elements, while mostly going in a new direction?

That has probably been the trickiest thing, honestly speaking. You've got a fan base that's dedicated to Castlevania, just as I was as a fan, but at the same time you've got to do something new. You've got to drive the series forward. You know, I don't want it to die. I want it to stay relevant and popular. Getting that balance right has been pretty tough, but at the same time with respect to Lords of Shadow, I think we took a risk. Even when the game came out, we weren't sure if it was going to be successful or not. It's kind of why we went to handheld because we didn't know what the next step was going to be. We didn't know if the game was going to be popular, so we said, "Let's make a handheld game; you don't need much money." We could do something small in order to carry on the series if necessary. Luckily, the game was successful, and senior management said, "You need to make a sequel." That was great, but we already started the 3DS game, so it was like, "OK, right." Luckily, we had a very rough idea about the arc, but we didn't have the detail, if you know what I mean. So we've got the beginning, and we've got the end, so let's develop the ideas and make it fit within the arc. That's how Mirror of Fate came about.

How do you respect the past while doing something new?

I think you've got to be brave and say we're going to put our mark on it. We are going to do what we think is right. We are going to try and be respectful to the past because I think you've got to, but at the same time, I think we were brave with Lords of Shadow. Some people liked what we did, and a lot of people didn't like what we did, so I think this time it's a bit easier because people kind of know what to expect. They kind of know that it's not going to be like it was before. They know it's going in a different direction, and they've accepted that it's a new universe, that it's a different timeline outside of the traditional timeline. I think it's a little bit easier this time to get that message across, you know, that we're going our own way.

I think we tried, particularly with Mirror of Fate, to meet some of those detractors a little bit further and meet their demands. We felt exploration wasn't as good as it could be in Lords of Shadow; we felt that was a weakness of the game. So when we were designing Mirror of Fate, exploration was much higher up on the list of things we wanted to achieve in terms of the final product. At the same time, we wanted to make sure the combat focus of the title, which is what Lords of Shadow was…we wanted to make sure that element was at the forefront. We don't want people who bought Lords of Shadow to suddenly get something different. They go, "I remember that Lords of Shadow game. It was awesome. But this game, what the hell is this?" We wanted to give them a true sequel, something that felt like it fit within the Lords of Shadow universe. So I think we're trying to straddle, and it's a very fine balancing act, but we aren't slaves to it. If a decision is made that we are going to take this in a different direction, we're just going to do it, you know? That's liberating.

So, Lords of Shadow freed you up to take some liberties with the series' storyline. Do you think that fans are going to be surprised with some of the events that take place in Mirror of Fate?

Yes, I think so, especially the story side of it. I think having a bad guy who has some depth to him, where you can kind of understand how he got to this place…at the end of this game, it's a WTF moment--it really is. We show Dracula how he has never been shown before, and I think people will go, "Shit, if I was him, I would be the bloody same." You know what I mean? So we're trying to give a perspective on it. Good and evil is not black and white in real life. Having characters who aren't black and white is really important to this game. I think that's something we've achieved, certainly with Dracula, with Simon, and with Trevor, because they are nuanced characters that have stories to tell, and it's a really interesting story that's really emotional. When you finish it, because you play the game backwards, starting with Simon, then playing as Alucard, then Trevor, it all becomes clear right at the end. That's the reason we did it. The very last scene, you click, and you want to play it again. You'll notice things that seem offhand or you didn't really notice before, and you go, "Aw shit!" It gives the game more depth. That's something we're really proud of with Mirror or Fate. The replayability is fantastic. I can't stop playing it, and I've been working on it for two years.

Is this arc going to come to a conclusion in Mirror of Fate, or is it going to carry over into Lords of Shadow 2?

There's a satisfying conclusion to the arc in Mirror of Fate, but the overarching arc is still there. You can play this game without having played the other. That's something we think is very important. In the first game, you have the story about bringing Marie back, about the god mask. That was the key thing, and it came to a conclusion, but you know there's the arc about how he became Dracula. That's going to be explained a little bit in Mirror of Fate, but more so in Lords of Shadow 2. I hate the word trilogy, but people are already saying that to us. It's going to feel like a whole. There's going to be a satisfying conclusion in Lords of Shadow 2, and everything's going to make sense.

Sony severs ties with PlayStation All-Stars developer

Sony has severed all ties with California-based SuperBot Entertainment, the developer it set up specifically to make last year's under-performing brawler PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

The news comes a fortnight after SuperBot laid off a batch of its staff, and the studio's long-term prospects are unclear. "We don't have a reduction plan as of yet, however it is unlikely we can continue with our current work force for an extended period of time," said SuperBot boss David Yang to Kotaku.

"We are still working things out and hope to continue on with as many of us as possible," he added.

Sony's Santa Monica Studio, which assisted with the development of PlayStation All-Stars, will now shepherd the game and all further downloadable content.

Both Sony and SuperBot said in statements that the split was cordial. "Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm that the working agreement with developer SuperBot Entertainment has amicably ended," said Sony. "We have had a positive working relationship with this talented studio, and wish them the best of success in their next endeavor."

Yang said "SuperBot Entertainment can confirm that the relationship with SCEA has ended on good terms. We are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work on with Sony on Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, and are extremely proud of the work we have done. SuperBot Entertainment will continue working on projects that reflect our passion for games and our commitment to creating award winning titles. We are very excited about beginning the next chapter of our future and invite all of our fans and supporters to follow our journey."

Two additional characters for PlayStation All-Stars were announced at the end of 2012, but there have been no subsequent announcements since then.

Shivs in the Subway - The Last of Us Video Preview

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 04 Februari 2013 | 19.51

Never thought a bunch of people would've been so put off by this -- combating the infected was obviously an inevitable part since the beginning; the hunters/humans were only the other side of that combat aspect. One can't possibly tell me that they weren't expecting scenarios at least somewhat similar to this, lol.

Then again, I might be biased, as I personally thought the footage looked pretty sh*ttin' incredible. May 7 for me can't come any slower.

Sony's rumoured PlayStation 4 reveal event will be livestreamed

Sony confirms gamers will be able to watch February 20 PlayStation Meeting event live online.

Sony's PlayStation Meeting on February 20 --where the company is inviting gamers to "see the future" and, presumably, the first glimpse of the PlayStation 4-- will be livestreamed over the Internet, Sony has confirmed to GameSpot.

More information about watching the stream live will be made available in the coming days. The PlayStation Meeting will take place in New York on February 20 at 18:00 EST/15:00 PST/23:00 GMT. GameSpot will be in attendance.

Previous rumours have said Sony and Microsoft would seek Apple-style reveals for their next-gen consoles. Apple announcements are usually private events rarely streamed in public, though the company did broadcast its most recent announcement of the iPad Mini.

The most recent PlayStation 4 rumours have said the console will, and that the controller will feature both a dedicated Share button and a PSVita-style touchpad. Last week GameSpot's Mark Walton stacked what is believed to be the PlayStation 4 components against the PC.

For more information on the future of PlayStation, check out GameSpot's coverage.
