Report: There was going to be Batman-inspired Darth Maul Star Wars game

Developer Red Fly (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II) was working on a Star Wars game starring the nefarious Sith Lord Darth Maul that took inspiration from Batman: Arkham Asylum, but it was not meant to be. The latest issue of Game Informer (via IGN) goes into depth about the unannounced game, which was reportedly in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U.

According to an anonymous source, Maul was going to be "insanely powerful and deadly" in the game, which was allegedly codenamed "Damage." Star Wars steward LucasArts had supposedly originally conceived a Darth Maul origin story, but would later shift its plans to tie the game to an upcoming season of animated show The Clone Wars.

Star Wars creator George Lucas also was supposedly involved in Damage, shifting the game's direction and creating story elements for Darth Krayt and Darth Talon. At one point, LucasArts reportedly considered buying Red Fly outright, but this never materialized, and LucasArts canceled Damage in 2011.

LucasArts itself effectively shut down around a year ago. Going forward, core installments in the Star Wars video game series are being developed by Electronic Arts. Battlefield developer DICE is currently working on an all-new Star Wars: Battlefront game, while Dead Space creator Visceral Games--led by former Uncharted director Amy Hennig--is at work on a mystery entry in the beloved sci-fi series.
