But numbers that express just how many consoles have been sold are scarce. Now, however, a recently-released video published by Sony has revealed that between the PS4, PS3, and Vita, Sony has sold over 100 million systems to date.

The video is geared toward third-party manufacturers who might want to create peripherals for the system, and Sony presents the number to make its console ecosystems attractive to them. But the number indicates a healthy and robust PlayStation family.

The last number we had for the PlayStation 3 came in November, when Sony announced that the console had sold over 80 million units. In April, we learned that the PS4 had crossed the 7 million mark.

For comparison, Microsoft revealed last October that the Xbox 360 had crossed 80 million units sold. The company has shipped 5 million Xbox One systems as of April, meaning that total sales between both systems have probably crossed 85 million.

Nintendo's console sales, of course, dwarf those of both Microsoft and Sony. The Wii sold well, crossing the 100 million mark last year. Nintendo has moved over 35 million 3DS units, and the Wii U broke 6 million at the end of March. In total, Nintendo has sold over 141 million systems between the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS.

Sony may give more information on the numbers later this month, when the NPD Group releases its monthly sales report for the United States. Not because the surrounding mechanics are broken or the levels are poorly structured, as the subsidiary elements of this third-person shooter are, for the most part, serviceable. However, every action building up to you actually pulling the trigger of a rifle feels more like a chore than an interesting setup for the perfect shot. There's an undeniable satisfaction that stems from the glorious slow-motion kills that abound in Sniper Elite III, but missions tend to promote stealthy, silent takedowns rather than the grotesque headshots it does so well.

Fortunately, what the game does best is on full display early on. The level design in Sniper Elite III is more open than previous games in the series, often encouraging shots being fired from more than 300 meters away. Instead of funneling you down a straight path, each of the eight locations in the campaign presents you with a sniping sandbox where creativity leads to better shooting and stronger positioning. Bullishly rushing headfirst into enemy territory is always an option, but the grizzled protagonist crumples to the dirt after just a pair of well-placed shots. Silent steps often lead to better vantage points, and with so many routes to choose from in any given level, the method by which the objective is completed is up to you.

That doesn't make this an open-world game, though. There are various side objectives like shutting down search lights or sabotaging the enemy's explosives supply, but there's still a clear path to completion within every mission. An ever-present objective marker reminds you that just 200 meters away lies a folder of intel that could greatly benefit the Allied forces, and all you need to do to collect it is pick off whatever patrolling soldiers stand in the way.

You're not required to kill everything with a heartbeat in order to progress, but the innate satisfaction that comes with long-range marksmanship is almost too great to pass up. After perching atop a sniper nest and locating a viable target, you have the option of steadying your breath and adding an additional red reticle that illustrates exactly where your bullet will drop. Once you fire off that perfect shot, the camera ignores the man behind the rifle and instead follows the round as it leisurely approaches its mark. It's a remarkable scene that all but erases auxiliary threats, letting you enjoy the slow-motion mayhem. The crack of your barrel will likely alert anything with a heartbeat nearby, but in that very moment, all that matters is the journey of a single bullet.

Be vewwy vewwy quiet.

The finale of the shot is pure, primal bliss. A quick X-ray view of a perfect kill shot often shows the lead splintering both ends of the skull, forcing bits of brain to escape from the newly opened flesh caverns. Eyes pop, lungs burst, and yes, testicles rupture as you pump round after round into the opposition. It's the feature attraction of the series, and it's better than ever. You kill hundreds of unsuspecting enemies in this manner, watching as formerly distinctive faces are violently torn beyond recognition. Turning off the drawn-out animations is an option, but this boorish display of bloody precision is a guilty pleasure.

Regrettably, you're more often faced with tedious stealth sections than the extended sniping segments that make the game so captivating. Levels are littered with soldiers who perk up as soon as you fire off a noisy round, and since you're about as flimsy as any single enemy on screen, clearing the map with a silenced pistol or a quick flip of the knife is often the most intelligent route to success. That's not to say that Sniper Elite III is overly challenging, however. If you take the time to spot and tag enemies before firing, you ensure that you have time to relocate to another vantage point immediately after taking your shot. The game rewards you for relocating successfully, though it's too easy to simply backpedal to an area that you've already cleared and then wait for enemies to cool off. If you prefer to stay put, puttering generators and the timely hum of planes flying overhead can mask the crash of your rifle, but these contrived elements aren't enough to fix the core problem that stifles the fun. Sniper Elite III shines when you're looking through the scope, but there are just too many situations throughout the campaign that encourage close-range monotony over the wildly entertaining sniping.

Alas, poor Yorick!

Slowly creeping from cover to cover to keep your heart rate down isn't exactly a thrill, but the locales you'll explore are at least more colorful and distinctive than what we've seen from the first two entries. The drab browns and grays have been replaced by the lush African theater, where beautiful lighting shines through bright green foliage and the jagged edges of sprawling mountains. It doesn't have the graphical pop that you expect from a current game, but Sniper Elite III still impresses with multihued vistas that appear to stretch for miles.

A handful of difficulty settings extends the life of an otherwise stunted campaign, which features one of the most forgettable World War II narratives in recent memory. The deadly serious dialogue and macho posturing aren't the right matches for the often laughably over-the-top death animations, but the story sequences are sparse enough to ignore. The best commentary will often come from a second player, as the cheers and jeers resulting from a brutal assassination are more interesting than anything an in-game character has to say. It's easy to bring a friend into any of the campaign missions for some backup, and while it can be cumbersome to coordinate shots without alerting the guards, adding a second sniper to the mix creates a whole new set of tactics to consider.

Regrettably, you're more often faced with tedious stealth sections than the extended sniping segments that make the game so captivating.

The co-op offerings extend to an asymmetrical mode called Overwatch, which acts as a wave-based alternative to the campaign. The bulk of the action revolves around spotting and downing as many enemies as possible before either supplies or health are depleted, and since shooting guys in the head is the draw of Sniper Elite III, this additional mode is worth a look. However, completing objectives and coordinating kills with a friend in the campaign is a much more interesting challenge than simply popping off as many rounds as your rifle will allow.

Competitive multiplayer is light on surprise and heavy on disheartening deaths. One of the most frustrating ways to die in any online shooter is a surprise sniper bullet to the head, since it's often a sudden end that makes you feel powerless. Those, by and large, are the only deaths you'll encounter here, and you can expect them early and often. Unique modes like Distance King and No Cross are a welcome change from your basic Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, as both encourage long-distance shooting over up-close-and-personal encounters. Still, there's nothing within the competitive suite that demanded my attention for more than a round or two of play.

The imperfect crime.

All of this is assuming you'll even be able to connect to an online game. Of the 30 or so times I tried to locate matches, I found my way into just three games. The other 27 times? I either failed to connect before the game even started, disconnected after a single spawn, or crashed to the PlayStation 4's dashboard. Sniper Elite III's multiplayer is unstable at best, with most of my playtime revealing a mostly broken experience.

I often found myself cursing the more frustrating elements of Sniper Elite III. Broken matchmaking, and half-baked stealth sequences shouldn't be this incessant in a series that's just reached its third outing. But it's almost too easy to forget all of these head-scratching issues when that bullet makes contact with someone's cranium. It's a shallow, crude pleasure, but the delightful disorder that's just around every corner is strong enough to overshadow an otherwise forgettable experience.
Wed, 09 Jul 2014 16:44:00 -0700 http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/sniper-elite-iii-review/1900-6415816/ http://www.gamespot.com/articles/cliff-bleszinski-discusses-project-bluestreak-opti/1100-6421012/

Cliff Bleszinski unveiled his newest game, Project BlueStreak, yesterday, but very little about it was announced beyond the very basics: It's a free-to-play sci-fi arena shooter for PC. We've yet to see screenshots or video from it, but Bleszinski is answering questions about it and his new studio, Boss Key Productions, as part of a Reddit Ask Me Anything right now.

As a free-to-play game, one of the most immediate questions about BlueStreak is how Boss Key will make money off of it. When asked about what kind of microtransactions are planned for BlueStreak, he said, "The #1 question that comes up in Free to Play every time. Honest answer: I'm not sure, and it's entirely too easy to tell or make the call. Free to Play is one of those genres that means something entirely different depending on the game. For every model that feels like Las Vegas methods (Zynga, Candy Crush) there's folks who do it right, like League of Legends, or Warframe.

"I'm DETERMINED to not do Pay To Win."

"I've never shipped a Free to Play game before. That's one of the MANY reasons why we're going with Nexon, they can provide server structures and a global peek into gamers of all types and guide us into a game that's more 'Shut up and take my money' as opposed to 'shaking you down for your hard earned cash.' So we'll experiment, tweak, tune, and most importantly, build a positive community around the game as we develop it."

As for why he decided to make a free-to-play game, he said, "Anyone can just jump in and play your darned game. Since this game is a shooter I want that one player who likes the game and doesn't feel like spending any money to be able to take down the trust fund kid that's spent a ton of money to have All The Stuff."

The reason we've yet to see any footage or screenshots from the game is because it doesn't really exist--Boss Key hasn't even decided on what engine to use yet. "It's wide open right now what tech we'd use," Bleszinski said. "Arjan [Brussee, COO] and I are HUGE fans of this sort of thing," he said. "On the PC it's easier than ever to have this sort of thing, let's just say we need to 'walk' before we 'run' in this department. We need to make a great game with a community around it, sort out if people actually want to spend a dime on it and then figure out how to get to user made arenas, at a minimum."

BlueStreak is not the game's final name, but it did prompt many people--myself included--to note that's also the name of a Martin Lawrence movie. Pitchford explained that 2K Australia's involvement with the game, "changed the nature of the pressure of what Borderlands 3 had to be for us."

"If there's going to be a Borderlands 3 and what that would be. We imagine what that might be, and frankly it scared us," he added. "But it's really important that Battleborn is its own universe first and that it has its own tone and its own style and that it can grow its legs. But it is a universe. That doesn't mean Japanese gamers will be left without any way of seeing the game be as gorey its designers intended, thanks to a DLC pack that will be made available to fans who preorder.

Speaking with Famitsu (as translated by Siliconera), ZeniMax Asia general manager Tetsu Takahashi explained that the changes were made in order to avoid a rating that would have restricted its ability to market the horror game. "If we were to make it the same way as the foreign version, it'd be rated CERO Z and we felt that it'd be best to release it the way the creators make it. However, that would limit the sales and advertising, so we'd lose the opportunity to reach out to as many customers possible," he said.

You probably get what I mean by "gore."

The CERO Z rating is for people ages 18 and up only--effectively the equivalent of the ESRB's Adults Only rating, which is rarely used. The alternative was for publisher Bethesda Softworks (a subsidiary of ZeniMax) to shoot for a CERO D rating, which is recommended for those ages 17 and up--basically an ESRB Mature rating.

And that's exactly what Bethesda has opted to do, though it still plans to offer that CERO Z experience to some. The regular version being released at retail in a censored form will carry a CERO D rating, but those who preorder will receive access to a "Gore mode DLC." This won't be included on the disc itself, but will allow gamers to download content that gives Japanese gamers the uncensored experience that would have warranted a CERO Z ratign.

Takahashi says that modifying the game to earn a CERO D rating "won't have an effect on the game itself." Combined with what he describes as "a vast amount of preorders," this route seemed like a natural option for the company.

It's unclear at this point as to whether this DLC will also be made available to those who don't preorder and, if so, how much it will cost. If the DLC does end up being sold for money, it wouldn't be the first time that mature content was made available as DLC. New copies of The Saboteur famously came with a code enabling nudity; secondhand buyers wanting the same had to buy the DLC on its own.

The Evil Within was delayed earlier this year; it's now scheduled for release in October. The only segment of the gaming population to experience growth from 2013 is the group of people who game on several different devices.

The NPD Group--the organization that collects video game sales data for the United States each month--published a study today that shows a growth in people diversifying their gaming among several platforms. The "Avid Omni Gamer," as NPD calls it, is defined as a person who plays games on multiple systems. Driven by an increase in mobile gaming, more people are now Avid Omni Gamers. According to the study, Avid Omni Gamers now compose 22 percent of the total gaming population, up 6 percent from last year. This section is now the second-largest group behind those who play exclusively free and mobile games.

NPD also found that mobile gaming continues to increase, making it the only platform to see growth from last year. 71 percent of gamers play games on phones, an increase of 4 percent from 2013.

Perhaps a reflection of a strengthening economy, people spent more money from April to June in 2014 on video games than they did during the same time period last year. Liam Callahan of the NPD explained, "Across both digital and physical formats, spending has increased from last year for consoles, portables, and digital gaming apps, which is great news when also combined with the fact that gamers are spending more time playing games."

Sales of the current-gen consoles have certainly given evidence for a solid and strengthening games industry. In April, Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 had sold 7 million units, with the Xbox One not far behind at 5 million shipped. Hardware sales have seen an almost 100 percent increase over 2013 in the last few months, as well.

Although I'm skeptical about the name, I am absolutely an Avid Omni Gamer. I play games on my phone, PS4, and PC all the time. Do you remain faithful to consoles or PC? Or have you diversified your gaming? A release date for the remastered version of the game has not yet been announced, but Double Fine says it will be a simultaneous launch across all platforms.

Grim Fandango is a classic adventure game released in 1998 by LucasArts. Double Fine comes into the equation as the company founded by Tim Schafer, who directed the game. Despite being widely acclaimed, it has never been re-released, making it both a challenge to find and difficult to run on modern computers without the use of third-party software. For many, this left piracy as the only option for playing it.

The absence of a re-release wasn't due to a lack of effort on Schafer's part. Asked in a Reddit AMA two years ago if he could convince the Disney-owned LucasArts to make it happen, he responded, "So far, no. I have not been able to. They're busy with the whole space thing they do. With the laser swords and teddy bear monkeys, you know?"

Following the announcement of the remastered version last month, 2 Player Productions, the group producing a documentary on Double Fine's development of Broken Age, released a retrospective video on the game. If nothing else, it deserves a viewing just to see Schafer in 1995. Check it out below.

Have you played Grim Fandango before? What platform do you plan on playing it on? The program is dead before its first birthday, as Microsoft originally announced it in late July 2013.

At the time, Xbox corporate vice president Marc Whitten (who has since left the company), said, "Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development."

But not anymore.

Xbox Advanced Technology Group's Martin Fuller told a group of media today, including Digital Spy, that Microsoft has "no plans" for the feature. "We were in the early stages of Xbox One looking at the idea of a retail kit that could be turned into a development kit, and vice versa," he said.

"In the end, although that was a very admirable goal, it hasn't happened unfortunately," Fuller added. "Can't tell you the specifics of exactly why not."

Asked to give more details about why the move was necessary, Fuller said, "As far as I'm aware there are no plans. I'm not aware of the reason why we didn't manage to do that." We have reached out to Microsoft's official Xbox PR team and will update this story if we hear anything back.

This is not the first time Microsoft has reversed an Xbox One policy. Last summer, the company changed a series of Xbox One policies in response to consumer feedback. In addition, the company announced just two months ago that Kinect would no longer be sold with all Xbox One units.

Eddie Makuch is a news editor at GameSpot, and you can follow him on Twitter @EddieMakuch

Got a news tip or want to contact us directly? That perhaps shouldn't come as a surprise in light of the lack of major releases in June, as well as the fact that Watch Dogs released in late May. Following it were two of June's new games, EA Sports UFC and Valiant Hearts: The Great War. Transistor, the number two game in May, fell outside of the top 20, while the number three game in May, MLB 14: The Show, fell all the way to number 16. Also of note is standalone DLC Infamous: First Light, preorders for which were strong enough to make it the number 10 game.

The PlayStation 3 list again follows the pattern that has emerged in recent months: Minecraft, and then whatever is on sale. Minecraft has been the top seller on PSN every month since its release on PS3 last December, and in June things were no different. Next up were the gorgeous JRPG Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, both of which were available at $5 at different points during the month.

PlayStation Vita's best-selling games were all titles that were discounted at one time or another in June, including Rainbow Moon, Real Boxing, and Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational (which I'm very glad to have bought for a mere $3.25). Borderlands 2, the most high-profile release on the system in some time, was down to number seven after being the number three title in May.

The full list of best-selling games for the North American PlayStation Store follow below.

So we'll experiment, tweak, tune, and most importantly, build a positive community around the game as we develop it."

As for why he decided to make a free-to-play game, he said, "Anyone can just jump in and play your darned game. Should there be another Borderlands, and what should it be?'," Pitchford said in August's issue of Game Informer (via Videogamer). "We had that discussion and there was this weird mixed bag. On one level it's like, 'Woah'. If you're going to do something that's called Borderlands 3 and it's going to be done in this next-generation environment, there's a whole bunch of ideas that come around of what has to happen in order for that to live up to what that needs to be."

This fall's Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel--developed principally by 2K Australia--really upped the ante for what a potential third Borderlands game from Gearbox needs to be, he said. Pitchford explained that 2K Australia's involvement with the game, "changed the nature of the pressure of what Borderlands 3 had to be for us."

"If there's going to be a Borderlands 3 and what that would be. We imagine what that might be, and frankly it scared us," he added.
