Microsoft is "thinking through" its Xbox 360 emulator for Xbox One

One day you might be able to replay Gears of War 3 on Xbox One.

Microsoft has briefly mentioned the current status of its ongoing attempt to implement Xbox One backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 titles.

In short: there are Xbox 360 emulation plans being looked at, but I wouldn't hold your breath right now.

The info, reported by Kotaku, came from development lead Frank Savage at a panel during Microsoft's Build conference. "There are [plans], but we're not done thinking them through yet, unfortunately."

One of the challenges right now, Savage says, is shifting from the PowerPC processor in the Xbox 360 to the X86 one featured in the Xbox One. "It turns out to be hard to emulate the PowerPC stuff on the X86 stuff. So there's nothing to announce," he said.

Speaking to GameSpot last year, Xbox One director Albert Penello said that it could conceivably use its Azure cloud servers to stream games, which could potentially allow Microsoft to stream older titles on its newest platform--like how Sony will stream PS3 titles to PS4 with PlayStation Now.

"Like rendering full games like [PlayStation Now] and delivering it to the box," said Penello. "We just have to figure out how, over time, how much does that cost to deliver, how good is the experience."

"I would love to see it myself," Savage concluded.
