The Bureau: XCOM Declassified arrives in August

After numerous delays and years of silence, 2K has finally announced its intentions for the mysterious XCOM first-person shooter that was originally announced in 2010. The game has evolved into a third-person tactical shooter called The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, a $60 Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC game due out on August 20.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified--in development at BioShock 2 studio 2K Marin--is set in 1962 America at the end of the Cold War. John F. Kennedy is president and the U.S. public at large is afraid of a nuclear war with Russia. At the same time, the US government is establishing a secret organization to combat this threat. As it turns out, it's not the Russians who invade, it's the aliens.

"And so the same organization has to switch gears to combat the aliens. So not only are you combating the aliens for the public physically, but you also have to keep it secret so you're not creating mass hysteria and panic in the streets," explained associate producer Andrew Dutra. "This is where the origin story comes in. The Bureau is one of these organizations and it's the start of how the hero becomes the XCOM organization."

Gamers play as agent William Carter, an intelligence operative with a determined resolve. He'll stop at nothing to get the job done "no matter what," 2K explained.

Described as a third-person tactical squad-based combat game, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified borrows from the praised XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Specifically, the new game will adopt the pillars of the strategy series--Team, Tactics, Tools, Technology, and Terror--and introduce them to players in a new way.

Creative director Morgan Gray explained that being tactical is a key component of The Bureau. He said players will only succeed if they work together. "The team and tactics aspect is at the forefront of our gameplay experience," he said.

Though the Bureau will be respectful of the tone and atmosphere of the classic strategy game series, the new game--designed for hardcore gamers--puts players on the ground and in the boots of a soldier. This makes for a compelling and novel experience, Gray argues.

"When we say tactical third-person squad-based combat game, that has a huge T on that tactical; it should be underlined and printed in bold. Because we're basically trying to get a game that puts you away from the turn-based, God's eye view of the action, and puts you in the boots of the squad leader in the battlefield where the bullets are flying," he said. "You have real-time control of your squad."

In terms of strategy and tactics, The Bureau will allow players to flank, perform leap frog procedures, cover and fire, and prioritize targets within their squad. In addition, gamers will be able to unleash powers to squadmates that are unlocked through experience points amassed over the course of the campaign.

"This is basically putting you in the heat of battle and asking you to use both your brains and bullets to win," Gray said.

The stakes are especially high in The Bureau, Gray explained, because when a squadmate dies, there is no coming back. Permadeath for companions is in place for the game, and Gray believes this is a revolutionary feature for the title.

"When they're dead, they're dead for good. Now, this is obviously part of the XCOM DNA, but in the third-person space, this is like a revolution," Gray said. "The concept of 'What? My squadmates are dead and they're gone forever?' Yes. And now you still have a lot of game to go and the clock's ticking. Our plotline is always moving forward. The consequences of that loss are immediate and there's no way to hide from them. The war will not stop for you."

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified will arrive in the wake of the well-received XCOM: Enemy Uknown, a turn-based strategy game for consoles and PC. Though The Bureau and Enemy Unknown are dissimilar in genre, Gray said he does not believe this will stretch the brand too far or dilute it in any way.

"I figure good games are good games," Gray said. "I don't think myself or 2K is too worried about diluting the brand as much as our goal is…we have a brand, let's find an expression that can bring more people to the table and give more people a chance to experience it in different ways."

Overall, the goal of The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is to "expand and open up the franchise" to gamers who may have been turned off by past entries in the series, while also preserving the pillars of the classic strategy franchise, Gray explained.

Nintendo not hosting press conference at E3 2013

Nintendo will not be doing a presentation at E3 2013, company president Satoru Iwata said during a financial results briefing today.

The company plans on hosting smaller events to showcase its new titles and updates instead of doing a large-scale presentation. For this year's E3, the company will be holding a closed event for American distributors and another closed hands-on event for the Western gaming media. Iwata will not be speaking at either event.

Iwata mentioned that the company was finding new ways to give information about its games directly to the home audience around the period of E3 2013. "During the E3 period, we will utilize our direct communication tools, such as Nintendo Direct, to deliver information to our Japanese audience … and we will take the same approach outside Japan for the overseas fans as well," he said.

The company will be showcasing upcoming Wii U titles slated for this year during this year's E3; it will not be announcing new hardware. For more information on Nintendo's plans on making the Wii U profitable, check out GameSpot's coverage.

Nintendo turns a profit but misses sales forecast by half

Sales of the Wii U stand at only 3.45 million worldwide, but Nintendo has reported a profit of ¥7.09 billion ($71.3m/£46.7m) for the financial year.

While the net income is almost half the company's previously estimated profit of ¥14 billion, the company has managed to turn around the whopping loss of ¥43 billion it reported last year--the first annual loss the company has ever posted.

3.45 million Wii Us have been sold globally as of March 31 2013, with fewer than 400,000 being sold in the last three months. The Wii U was outsold by the Wii, which sold 3.98 million units across the company's financial year.

Nintendo blamed poor sales of its devices in North America and Europe, though noted that the 3DS has now become the console of choice in Japan.

Wii U worldwide software sales stand at 13.42 million units as of March 31. Nintendo Land makes up 2.6 million of that figure, while New Super Mario Bros. U has also shifted 2.15 million copies.

Meanwhile, the 3DS has sold 31.09 million units and 95.03 million games. Super Mario 3D Land remains the 3DS sales king with 8.29 million copies sold worldwide, and recent release Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon has managed to gain 1.22 million buyers since launch.

Nintendo's net sales were also slightly down on last year, but damage to the company's bottom line was mitigated slightly thanks to financial gains made by the currency exchange.

For the next financial year the publisher predicts it will sell 9 million Wii U consoles worldwide. 3DS expectations are higher at 18 million.

Previous reports had suggested Nintendo would announce a loss of ¥18.7 billion for the financial year.

Satoru Iwata named Nintendo of America CEO

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has expanded his duties to head up Nintendo of America.

Iwata will take absorb the Nintendo of America CEO role from outgoing Tatsumi Kimishima, who is being promoted to general manager of parent company Nintendo Co. Ltd pending shareholder approval.

Nintendo of America president and COO, Reggie Fils-Aime, will report to Iwata.

Nintendo hopes the move will allow the company to more easily share a global business strategy for the Wii U and 3DS. Speaking in a statement, the publisher said it hopes to increase its "organisational agility in the current competitive environment."

Sales of the 3DS and in North America and Europe have failed to match the success seen in Japan, and Nintendo is also gearing up to a vital E3 showing where it will attempt to entice customers worldwide to adopt its Wii U hardware.

Kimishima's new role is expected to begin from this summer, where he will relocate from Redmond to Nintendo's headquarters in Japan. He was promoted to CEO of Nintendo of America in 2006.

Nintendo today announced it has returned to profit despite weak sales of the Wii U.

2K will show redesigned XCOM shooter in 'a matter of days'

2K has confirmed the XCOM shooter it announced three years ago has "undergone an evolution" and will be re-revealed in the next few days.

BioShock 2 developer 2K Marin is handling the squad-based tactical shooter. "Announced back in 2010, the game has undergone an evolution since we last showed it to you at E3 2011," wrote 2K on its blog.

2K points to last year's critically celebrated revival of the classic turn-based XCOM. "Firaxis' critically acclaimed turn-based strategy title, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, has reignited the classic franchise and we feel that the time is right to deliver a new experience within the world of XCOM," says 2K.

Development at 2K Marin has been "explored" and "refined", with 2K saying the "creative development of this game has been a collaborative process of discovery and iteration."

"We can't wait to share more details with you about the game in only a matter of days," concluded 2K.

Rumours from last year suggested XCOM is now a third-person shooter rebranded as The Bureau. 2K has also asked customers, via a marketing survey, whether they'd rather pay full price or opt for a cheaper downloadable title.

Fans offer free Mother 3 translation to Nintendo

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 22 April 2013 | 19.51

Role-playing game Mother 3 has never been released outside of Japan, but that has not stopped dedicated fans from translating it in its entirety. The team of fans, which also includes a professional translator, has offered up its localisation of the game to Nintendo free of charge in a post on its development blog.

Written under the handle "Mato", the blog post said, "I realize that localizing a game this size can cost a lot, so if it'll help in even the slightest, I'll gladly offer to let Nintendo use my text translation files for any use at all, completely for free."

The post also mentioned previous fan translations used by the game publishers, citing Ys: The Oath in Felghana as an instance where a fan translation was used in the creation of the localised version.

Mother 3 is the third game in the Earthbound series. The first and second games in the franchise were released outside of Japan as Mother and EarthBound, respectively. The third game was announced in 2006 for the Game Boy Advance console, although plans for localization in the West were never announced.

Hawken brings in new mech and map in Technician update

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 19 April 2013 | 19.51

Technician class specializes in support and on-the-fly repairs; Front Line map is a new version of game's alpha build test maps.

Meteor Entertainment and Adhesive Games have announced a new update for Hawken that features a new mech and a new map for players.

The mech is called the Technician and it specializes in supporting units in the battlefield, just like the Medic in Team Fortress 2. It comes equipped with a Redox O2 gun that deals minimal damage but coats enemies with damage-over-time debuffs, and a Helix repair torch that both heals friendly units and deconstructs enemy units. Its special ability is a skill called amplification, which increases the repair rate of the Helix repair torch for a short amount of time.

The new map introduced is called Front Line, which is a reskinned version of a Hawken alpha map called Valkyrie. The bright cityscape-tailored map is large and open, but it also has a few alleys and tunnels for players wishing to lay low during skirmishes.

The update is available now. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's recent coverage on the title.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition spotted

Polish retailer lists Legendary Edition of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which collates the game and its three DLC packs.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim could be getting a Legendary edition, if one retailer listing is correct.

Polish retailer Ultima (spotted by Eurogamer Poland) listed the game with a June 7 release date, stating the Legendary Edition would include The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and its three expansions Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn.

The suggested retail price for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions--199.90 zł--would suggest a standard price of around £39.99/$59.99. The PC version is marked slightly cheaper.

Bethesda recently confirmed that there would be no more DLC released for Skyrim, and that the team was moving on to its next project.

GameSpot has reached out to Bethesda for comment.

Previous Bethesda RPG's The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Fallout: New Vegas have all received similar editions in the past.

Former Sega employee reveals Sega Pluto prototype

Unreleased machine is a Sega Saturn with Netlink modem built into the device; still in working order.

An alleged former Sega employee under the online handle "Super Magnetic" has posted pictures of an unreleased Sega console on the Assembler Games forum.

The post states that the device is called the Sega Pluto, which is a Sega Saturn console with a Netlink modem built into the system. The system weighs in at 2.8kg and has two controller ports, a flip-top drive bay, and a cart slot. The machine has the Sega Saturn logo on top of it, which could infer that the device was to be marketed as a new SKU for the Sega Saturn.

According to the forum member, there are only two known prototypes of the hardware in existence. The device the forum member is currently holding is in working order and can play NTSC US Sega Saturn games. The Netlink modem was compatible with a number of Sega Saturn titles like Saturn Bomberman and Virtual-On.

Age of Empires II HD Edition Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 17 April 2013 | 19.51

The appeal of Age of Empires II: HD Edition is readily apparent. After all, the original Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings and its expansion are so beloved that there is still a healthy modding and multiplayer community devoted to the game. This is an impressive feat for a real-time strategy game that came out over a decade ago, especially when you consider that the official multiplayer matchmaking service was shut down years ago. A prettier version of AOEII with easier multiplayer matchmaking and mod support (via Steam's servers and Steam Workshop) is a solid idea. Unfortunately, Hidden Path's HD edition of Ensemble Studios' classic RTS suffers from a variety of bugs and missed opportunities.

AOEII:HD's gameplay is instantly familiar to practically anyone who has ever played a real-time strategy game focused on the big picture. This fast-paced game has you exploiting natural resources, constructing beautiful wonders and formidable castles, and advancing from the Dark Ages to the much more dignified-sounding Imperial Age. Along the way, you use the tried-and-true rock-paper-scissors formula (pointy sticks kill cavalry, villagers kill sheep, and so on) to violently evict other players from the map. There is a lot of depth to AOEII:HD, because all of the 18 playable nations have unique bonuses, units, and tech trees. For example, Frankish castles are cheap, Turks field awesome gun-powder units early on, and the Huns don't need houses to support their population. There are also randomly generated and real-world maps to play on, as well as numerous game modes, including a pacifist game type where the first player to complete a wonder wins. Because of the variety of victory conditions and diverse powers for each nation, there are a lot of ways to play, and excel, in Age of Empires II HD.

However, Hidden Path missed opportunities to improve on AOEII's gameplay. As things stand, you cannot give move-attack orders; dragging a box over a mass of units selects both villagers and troops; and it's impossible to queue up a mixture of units and research at the same building. AI pathfinding also needs some work. For instance, villagers ordered to travel to a lumber camp located in plain sight 700 yards away over open country may inexplicably decide to take a scenic route through a canyon populated by ravenous jaguars. These are examples of flaws that could have been resolved, but increasing the maximum population limit from 200 to 500 is the only noticeable change made in terms of gameplay.

The main difference between AOEII:HD and AOEII is the HD version's use of Steam for multiplayer matchmaking, which, given the size of Steam's user base, is significantly more convenient than programs like GameRanger. You can hop into a random game from the lobby browser and, theoretically, enjoy fantastic experiences. The game is highly enjoyable for both friendly comp stomps and player-vs.-player games. Of course, some people rage quit after accusing you of cheating simply because of your Byzantine fire ships' predilection for sinking undefended fishing fleets.

Still, a victory is a victory. A match might involve you sending a series of impressive (and foolish) Aztec human wave attacks against Viking castles and longboats defending the river crossings separating your peoples. Untold hundreds of digital Aztecs could die trying to destroy the proud Norsemen's wonder. When the stars are aligned correctly and everything works, AOEII:HD's multiplayer is exceptionally fun.

Ace Attorney 5 out this July in Japan

Fifth game in courtroom adventure game series to feature free in-game outfit DLC and the return of protagonists Phoenix Wright and Apollo Justice.

Capcom has announced the Japanese release date for Gyakuten Saiban 5, which is better known as Ace Attorney 5 to Western audiences.

According to a recent issue of Japanese game magazine Famitsu, the 3DS courtroom adventure game will be out in July 25 in Japan. The game features the return of main protagonist Phoenix Wright and fourth game protagonist Apollo Justice. Wright will be assisted by a new character named Kokone Kizuki throughout his court cases. Kizuki can use her glove and earrings to detect emotions displayed by witnesses that can be used to Wright's advantage during interrogations.

The Japanese copy of the game will come with a code for free DLC that features Wright's original suit from the first three games and a few new outfits for Justice and Kizuki. The offer will last until August 15.

Although there is no confirmation on a North American localization and release date, an eventual release seems likely given that the first four Ace Attorney games and its spin-off, Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, made it way to the West. However, the sequel to the latter game has yet to be localized at this point in time.

EA offers bigger payouts in extended $27m football monopoly settlement

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 16 April 2013 | 19.51

New terms in the long-running Pecover vs. Electronic Arts lawsuit have extended the time those affected will be allowed to make a claim for monetary reimbursement, as well as offering claimants almost three times the amount.

The original cut-off date for the football-related lawsuit was March 5, but more time is being made available because a lower-than-anticipated number of claims have been made.

Customers who have purchased any Madden, NCAA Football, or Arena Football game between 2005 and 2012 will be eligible for reimbursement in the settlement.

Owners of last-gen football titles will receive $20.37 per game, while current-gen titles will pay out $5.85 a piece. These figures are up from the previously offered $6.79 and $1.95, respectively.

If total claims exceed $27m then the payout figure will be adjusted. Any leftover money from the settlement, which previously would have been donated to gaming charity Child's Play, will now go to the US federal government.

In July 2012, EA agreed a settlement of $27 million for the long-running class-action lawsuit, which alleged the company's licensing agreements "monopolized an alleged market for interactive football software."

The class action lawsuit had been running for four years, and the settlement covered EA's licenses for the NCAA Football and Arena Football series of games.

Licenses pertaining to EA's long-running Madden franchise are not affected.

As part of the proposed settlement, there will be a five-year ban on exclusive licenses between EA and both the NCAA and Arena Football after the current contracts expire in 2014.

"We made a business decision to settle this lawsuit and put the matter behind us. We look forward to continuing our partnerships with the NFL and NCAA," said an EA representative to GameSpot at the time.

EA's last Arena Football title--Arena Football: Road to Glory--was published in 2007, and the last non-EA NCAA title was made by Sega in 2002.

Bethesda: Used games 'absolutely' a concern

Used games are "absolutely" a concern for Elder Scrolls and Fallout developer Bethesda. Speaking with Destructoid, marketing vice president Pete Hines said his company has attempted to lessen the impact of second-hand sales by supporting games with downloadable content that encourages users to hold on to their discs, among other things.

"Absolutely it's a concern," Hines said. "We have tried to mitigate it by creating games that offer replayability, by supporting them with DLC that's worth hanging onto the game for, or offering tools that let them take things further."

Hines conceded that Bethesda does not have all the answers when it comes to the multifaceted issue of the used game market. He said an solution that works for everyone--retailers, publishers, and developers--may be hard to come by.

"There's no doubt that being a videogamer is expensive. Games are not cheap to buy because they're expensive to make, and people are looking for ways to keep it affordable," Hines said. "I'm not sure anyone has figured out a solution that works for everyone, and there simply may not be one until someone figures out how to include developers and publishers in the loop on used games sales instead of keeping it all for themselves."

Most recently, debate and discussion has surrounding the second-hand market has related to the possibility of the PlayStation 4 and still-unannounced Xbox 720 blocking used games. GameStop management said last month that it has a "high degree of confidence" that the PS4 will play used games, while reports have claimed the next Xbox will block second-hand titles.

Climax Studios teases Prince of Persia-esque title

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories developer Climax Studios has uploaded screenshots for an upcoming title that resemble a Prince of Persia-style game.

The now-removed images for the unannounced title--dubbed by Climax as a "character action platformer"--were marked as a tech demo.

The leaping, bounding protagonist is shown sporting a white vest and red sash, and the architecture in the background of one shot resembles the Middle Eastern aesthetic of Ubisoft's Prince of Persia series.

Ubisoft has said the Prince of Persia series is currently "paused," but that the game remains part of the publisher's portfolio.

"Prince of Persia is part of Ubisoft's portfolio," said Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat in January. "As a matter of fact, we sometimes iterate on franchises and sometimes we give them time to breathe and time to grow, or time to rest. Prince of Persia is as important as any other franchise for Ubisoft. As soon as we have something to show, we will."

The last Prince of Persia title--Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands--was released in 2010.

Climax Studios is also working on another project, which also remains unnamed, though the framing of the screenshots suggests a game with horror themes.

Free Forza Horizon DLC out this week

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 15 April 2013 | 19.51

Forza Horizon will add the free "1,000 Club Expansion Pack" on April 16, Turn 10 Studios and Playground Games have announced. The content features more than 1,000 new challenges, ten Xbox Live achievements worth 250 Gamescore, and two new cars.

The DLC features new challenges for every car in Forza Horizon. Some of these trials focus on speed, while others test players' driving skills and stunt abilities, like burnouts, drifting, catching air, smashing objects, or navigating through traffic at high speed.

According to Forza Horizon creative director Ralph Fulton, the game will recognize which cars a player has in their garage and will recommend challenges accordingly.

Microsoft said "most" car challenges can be completed with cars in the main game, though players who hold the $50 Forza Horizon season pass or who have purchased the Rally expansion pack will have even more options available to them.

The two new cars included with the 1,000 Club Expansion Pack are the 1956 Ford F100 truck and the 1995 RUF CTR2, which boasts 520 horsepower and a top speed above 215 mph.

I have to wonder...are is the MMO to Korea what the FPS in to the US? I have to ask because all I hear about games from Korea involve MMOs.

That aside, the combat in this game does look pretty awesome. That aspect alone has me hopeful for a worldwide release (I can read Japanese, but sadly not Korean).

Free-to-play Ridge Racer revealed

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 12 April 2013 | 19.51

Namco Bandai today announced Ridge Racer Driftopia, a free-to-play downloadable racing game from Unbounded developer Bugbear Entertainment. The game will launch "later in 2013" for PC and PlayStation 3.

Gamers will be able to purchase additional items through in-game microtransactions, though these were not detailed at any length. No further game details were divulged.

In a statement, Namco Bandai senior vice president Olivier Comte said that in addition to continued support for the "vital" traditional retail sector, the company is committed to embracing new business models, like free-to-play.

"Free-to-play is playing an increasingly important role, so it's very exciting to be bringing one of our most successful franchises to the free-to-play space for everyone to enjoy," he said.

During a European games conference last year, Comte criticized free-to-play games, saying they "can't be high-quality." He did, however, make clear that Namco is willing to consider all funding models for future games.

In addition to Ridge Racer Driftopia, Bugbear is working on an a "full-contact" demolition derby game for PC and yet-to-be-announced platforms.

Adam Orth no longer with Microsoft after "always-on" comments

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 11 April 2013 | 19.51

Microsoft creative director Adam Orth is reported to have left the company.

Sources speaking to Game Informer say that Orth resigned from the company following the outcry triggered by his comments that customers should learn to deal with a console that requires a permanent connection to the Internet.

Speaking on Twitter last week, Orth made headlines have saying "sorry, I don't get the drama around having an 'always on' console. Every device now is 'always on'. That's the world we live in." He then used the hashtag "#dealwithit."

Orth continued, saying that people should "definitely get with the times and get the internet" and that "I want every device to be 'always on.'"

The comments, which arrived off the back of another wave of rumours suggesting Microsoft's next Xbox would require gamers to be connected to the Internet in order to play games, provoked anger in many corners of the gaming community.

Microsoft later took steps to distance itself from Orth's "inappropriate" comments, issuing a statement saying "we apologize for the inappropriate comments made by an employee on Twitter yesterday. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers."

"We are very sorry if this offended anyone, however we have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter."

Orth had joined Microsoft in 2012 as a creative director on a currently unannounced project. He had previously worked on God of War 3 and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II.

Rayman Legends delay triggered creation of 30 new levels

The seven month delay of former Wii U exclusive Rayman Legends has given Ubisoft Montpellier time to add 30 additional levels into the game, the developer has said.

Speaking to ONM UK, senior game manager Michael Micholic spoke about the new additions. "The things we are adding aren't minor," he said, "we're not talking about adding some polish here and there, but 30 new levels and several new bosses."

Rayman Legends was scheduled to be released on the Wii U in February 2013, but was pushed back to September to make way for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the title. News of the delay angered many fans, and even caused some to protest outside Ubisoft Montpellier's offices.

Also speaking to ONM, series creator Michel Ancel said he wasn't shocked by the backlash. "It was really hard for us," said Ancel, "Of course, there are more important issues and problems in the world but we worked really hard to make something and were so involved, it was difficult for us and the fans."

Ubisoft has promised Wii U owners of Rayman Legends an exclusive challenge mode.

Writing anonymously back in February, an ex-Ubisoft developer expressed his frustration at the original delay and said that the team was working overtime for months to have the game ready for February.

"For practical matters," said the developer, "you'll have to wait for some months for the game to be released and will most likely serve for more content to be added and do it better. For us, this means we've spent 6 months barely seeing our wives, kids, and friends for nothing because, after all, such a haste wasn't needed. Believe it, it was a hell to swallow these news."

Rayman Legends is scheduled to be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U in September 2013. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

PSN hackers plead guilty in UK court

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 10 April 2013 | 19.51

Four members of Lulz Security (LulzSec) have pleaded guilty to hacking more than 70 million PSN and Sony Online accounts in 2011, according to GameSpot's sister site CNET UK. Sony's PlayStation Network was out of operation and inaccessible for three weeks in April 2011.

Aged 18 to 26, the four British men faced charges at Southwark Crown Court in London. The group's main spokesperson, 20-year-old Jake Davis, also ran the LulzSec Twitter account.

Mustafa Al-Bassam (18), Ryan Ackroyd (26), and Ryan Cleary (21) also pleaded guilty. The group was arrested on charges relating to attacks on sites including the CIA and UK crime agencies, and claimed responsibility for being behind the hacking of more than 70 million PSN and Sony Online accounts in 2011.

The PlayStation Network outage occurred in April 2011, and saw Sony bring down its online gaming and retail services for approximately three weeks, costing the company an estimated $171.1 million. The outage occurred shortly after an attack by "hacktivist" group Anonymous, which insisted that its organisation had nothing to do with the extended downtime.

The four LulzSec members will be sentenced next month. The group previously targeted several gaming-related sites, including Minecraft, League of Legends, and Eve Online.

Naughty Dog insisted on female testers for The Last of Us

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 09 April 2013 | 19.51

The Last of Us was originally only intended to be focus tested on a male audience, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckman revealed in an interview with The Escapist.

The oversight came not from the studio creating the game, but rather a seemingly "girls don't play video games" attitude from an unnamed research firm given the job of managing focus testing during development.

"Another aspect that influences how a game is promoted is focus testing. Players are rounded up and are asked to view materials and answer some quantitative and qualitative questions about it," Druckman explained. "My big surprise during this process [was] that the research group wasn't planning on focus testing female gamers--it's something we had to specifically request. I hope this is a relic of the past that will soon go away."

The article went on to suggest that the marketing firm even allegedly went as far as to recommended moving co-main character Ellie to the back of the game box. Naughty Dog ignored the advice, instead placing her alongside Joel on the front of the game's packaging.

The Last of Us was previously scheduled to arrive on May 7, but was last month delayed five weeks to a June 14 launch. Naughty Dog explained at the time that due to the "massive" nature of the game's story, the extra development time was needed to "ensure every detail" was up to the developer's standards.

A demo for The Last of Us is in the works, with owners of God of War: Ascension receiving first access.

Standalone Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon to be released in May - Report

The heavily rumoured but currently unannounced Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon will be a standalone title released in May, an updated listing on Xbox.com suggests.

At the end of last week a series of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon screenshots appeared on Xbox.com, but an updated description for the game now says "Playing Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon doesn't require a copy of Far Cry 3."

The game's description also suggests that it will feature a neon-tinged take on the series' open-world traversal, and star ubiquitous 80s action movie star Michael Biehn as protagonist Rex Colt.

"Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is THE Kick-Ass Cyber Shooter taking place on a bizarre open-world island crawling with evil," reads the description.

"Welcome to an 80's VHS vision of the future. The year is 2007 and you are Sargent Rex Colt, a Mark IV Cyber Commando who's fighting against a cyborg army gone rogue. Your mission: get the girl, kill the baddies, and save the world. Experience every cliché of a VHS era vision of a nuclear future, where cyborgs, blood dragons, mutants, and Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, Navy Seals) collide."

The listing also states that the game will be released on Wednesday May 1.

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon first appeared as a listing in the Brazilian classification ratings group at the start of March. Ubisoft also showed a teaser site for the game on April 1.

Kings Quest rights go from Telltale to Activision

Activision has regained the rights to the long-dormant Kings Quest series from The Walking Dead creator Telltale Games.

Telltale announced that it had purchased the rights to Kings Quest in 2011, but now Telltale's vice president of publishing Steve Allinson confirmed the rights to the game had returned to Activision. "While we deeply love King's Quest here at Telltale," said Allinson in a statement to Digital Trends, "we can confirm that we are no longer working on the franchise."

"There was a time last year that we investigated partnering with third party developers to produce the game as a partnership but decided against outsourcing. We are not privy to what plans Activision has for the franchise, if any."

Kings Quest was a notable fantasy-themed adventure game series which ran between 1984 and 1998. The series was developed by Sierra Entertainment, with rights to the series falling to Activision when it merged with Vivendi in 2008.

Also speaking to Digital Trends, Leisure Suite Larry remake developer Replay was also planning on making a new Kings Quest game. Replay owner Dan Trowe said that Activision has its own plans for a Kings Quest game, however.

"Activision's probably not going to give us the King's Quest rights," Trowe said. "[Telltale] had it, and we were going to license it from them to make the remakes."

"Then I talked to the guys at Activision and they were like, 'No, we're pulling it because we're going to do it ourselves,'" continued Trowe, but he has no other details as to Activision's plans.

Telltale is currently working on a second season of The Walking Dead alongside an adaptation of Bill Willingham's Fables graphic novels.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen - Talking Monsters & Mayhem

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 03 April 2013 | 19.51

@idunnodude Well, if that gameplay is amazing, and therefore has a great amount of interesting and unique challenge and replayvalue(which leads to far more than 20 hours of gameplay), I rather have that, than playing another boring WoW-alike game like Skyrim(which is mostly about shallow action, fetch-questing and no challenge whatsoever) for 100 hours.

I want to play a great skill-based action-rpg, infused with  unique Capcom-Tacticalness - not another off-the-mill poodle-breeder-simulation.

Square Enix Los Angeles hit with layoffs

Undisclosed amount of people let go from Californian studio.

Square Enix has laid off an undisclosed number of staff at its Los Angeles studio in California, the publisher has confirmed.

In a statement issued to Joystiq, a Square Enix representative said "we can confirm that Square Enix's Los Angeles office has eliminated a number of positions as part of the corporate restructuring announced last week."

"This is an unfortunate situation and we are offering assistance and severance packages to any employees affected by this, we want to thank them for their hard work and sincerely wish them well in the future."

Square Enix Los Angeles was involved with the publisher's MMO titles, such as Final Fantasy XIV and Wakfu. The studio had previously suffered another round of layoffs back in December 2012.

Former Square Enix president Yoichi Wada resigned last week after announcing an "extraordinary" loss in the publisher's first quarter financials. The loss was attributed to many of the publisher's games suffering in America and Europe, with the recent high-profile reboot of Tomb Raider failing to hit its sales target, despite selling 3.4 million copies in its opening month.

Free SimCity DLC offers sponsored Nissan Leaf car dock

Maxis is offering sponsored DLC for SimCity, starting with a free Nissan Leaf charging station.

In game, the Nissan Leaf charging stations offers no real downsides--the building generates happiness without requiring power, water, or workers. It doesn't generate any waste. The in-game advertisement does, however, feature a prominent Nissan logo and fill your city with Nissan's electric Leaf cars.

"Plopping down the Nissan LEAF® Charging Station will add happiness to nearby buildings," says Maxis. "Adding the Charging Station will not take power, water or workers away from your city. Zoom in to the streets of cities and players will start seeing a percentage of their Sims from all wealth classes driving the electric vehicles. The Charging Station produces no garbage or sewage as well making it pollution free."

Any SimCity player interested in the Nissan Leaf charging station can download it for free from Origin or the in-game store. The content will be available for the next six months.

Free of Charge - Warframe

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 01 April 2013 | 19.51

The game is fun, but needs more variety and some progression. Earning credits is a chore, I'm building my first warframe after 30+ hours of gameplay. Still some bugs in beta.

The guys in video are not entirely correct, all items can be farmed in game, with the exception of pure cosmetic stuff like colours. Helmet blueprint drop (rarely) from alert missions, and weapons can be either bought directly or as a blue print. But creds is the real bottleneck in the game, but then can't really blame the guys for trying to earn a living for their hard work.
