Watch Conan O'Brien's Reaction to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 31 Oktober 2014 | 19.51

Comedian and late night TV host Conan O'Brien recently got to play an early copy of next week's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. While he says he can't show you gameplay due to legal reasons, he did release a funny teaser trailer for his upcoming review.

In the video below, we see Conan's reaction to playing Advanced Warfare. Suffice it to say, he's excited about it. He even goes as far to say, "that was the greatest feeling I've ever experienced, and I've watched two of my children be born."

Conan's review of Advanced Warfare will come next week.

Advanced Warfare launches November 4 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. You can get it one day early, however, through the Day Zero edition. The game has a standard single-player campaign, head-to-heard multiplayer, co-op, and maybe even a zombies mode.

Acclaimed PS4 Shooter Resogun Coming to Vita

Developers of Resogun, the widely praised arena shooter that was launched with the PlayStation 4, are working on the release of a PlayStation Vita version.

James Hawkins, a representative for PlayStation Europe, told a fan on the PS Blog that the PS Vita version "is coming and is looking, sounding and most importantly, playing great."

Upon release in November 2013, Resogun was applauded for its visual effects and intense gameplay. Developer Housemarque was nominated for several key awards, including the DICE Game of the Year, while GameSpot's Resogun review was glowing with praise.

Critic Peter Brown wrote: "Resogun's controls, presentation, and rapid-fire enemy assaults make for an exciting experience. You're constantly under pressure, practically suffocating behind swarms of enemies, but you're never without the means for survival."

It is unclear when a PS Vita version will be released.

Microsoft Shuts Down Xbox Entertainment [Update]

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 30 Oktober 2014 | 19.51

Update: Nancy Tellem and Jordan Levin, two executives who headed up Xbox Entertainment Studios, have been let go as the corporation winds down the division.

In a statement released to GamesIndustry.biz, Microsoft wrote:

"Yes, we can confirm that Xbox Entertainment Studios has closed as part of the companywide restructuring announced by Microsoft last July."

"Xbox Entertainment Studios has officially closed. Nancy and Jordan were key members and visionaries for the XES team, and we thank them for their leadership and many contributions."

Original story follows: Following this morning's announcement that Microsoft will lay off up to 18,000 of its employees, the company has revealed it will shut down Xbox Entertainment Studios, the division responsible for original Xbox programming.

In a statement issued to GameSpot, Microsoft outlined its plans to "streamline a handful of portfolio and engineering development efforts across Xbox" This includes the shutdown of XES "in the coming month." Prior to this, it was unclear how the Xbox business would be affected by the layoffs; a report earlier this week suggested Xbox marketing employees would be let go, but that remains unconfirmed.

Some of XES' employees--including president Nancy Tellem and executive vice president Jordan Levin--will "stay on and remain committed to original programming already in production." This includes Signal to Noise--the documentary series that will cover, among other subjects, the Atari E.T. dig--as well as Halo: Nightfall and Steven Spielberg's Halo TV series. The Halo projects will both "continue as planned with 343 Industries," and things like entertainment apps and the ability to watch TV through the Xbox One will not be impacted by this move.

A week ago, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella offered a show of support for the Xbox division, which the company has reportedly considered selling off. But his statement made no mention of Microsoft's attempts to develop original video programming in recent years. This programming was to include interactive content, but would not affect the "gamer-first" approach Microsoft was taking with the Xbox One.

Plans for a wide variety of content in addition to the shows mentioned above had already been announced. This includes a program from JASH (the comedy group comprised of Tim and Eric, Michael Cera, Sarah Silverman, and Reggie Watts) and a soccer reality series called Every Street United that already debuted on Xbox Live to coincide with the World Cup.

XES has reportedly had difficulties in the past securing deals for new content. It was always unclear how, exactly, the original programming XES was pursuing would be released, like whether it would only be available through Xbox platforms and, if so, if it would be for Xbox Live Gold members. We also never got any hard details on how the programming would be interactive, which is what Microsoft said would make this "a unique experience."

Tellem, a former CBS executive, joined Microsoft in 2012 to lead its efforts into the original programming business. XES was founded shortly thereafter and has been pursuing content ever since. In April, Tellem said the studio's work was still "in the early stages."

This strikes me as an unsurprising move, as the expansion into original programming never felt like a natural move for Xbox. And, as noted above, there was so much uncertainty about how it would all work, even after more than a year and a half, that it might be for the best that Microsoft moves on from this venture. If nothing else, combined with the company's showing at E3, it's hard to question that Xbox's focus has indeed been the games since Phil Spencer was promoted in March.

What do you make of the closure of XES? Let us know in the comments below.

Wii U Gets Pre-Loading With Smash Bros.

Following Xbox One and PlayStation 4, Nintendo has announced that it will introduce pre-loading functionality for Wii U and 3DS games. The feature will be implemented first on Wii U with Super Smash Bros. next month, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said in prepared comments released today.

The pre-loading functionality will later be rolled out to 3DS sometime in 2015, though Iwata did not say which game will be the first to support the new feature.

Pre-loading, long a staple of PC gaming and more recently introduced on consoles, allows users to buy a game ahead of release and download most of the content before the title is actually released. Of course, the game can't be played until its official release date, but gamers tend to enjoy the feature because it allows them to play games as quickly as possible.

Nintendo's pre-loading system will be available for games purchased through the eShop as well as via download cards sold at brick-and-mortar stores.

Iwata explained that the pre-load feature for Wii U and 3DS is just one of the "various approaches" Nintendo is taking to make its digital business more user-friendly. Nintendo also recently started allowing users to buy digital games through Nintendo.com.

We recently got to play Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. You can see new footage of the game and hear our thoughts in the video above. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U launches November 21.

James Cameron On VR -- Meh

Veteran film director James Cameron is not impressed with virtual reality technology like Oculus Rift. During a recent Wall Street Journal event in California, the Titanic and Avatar director said he doesn't see the appeal of Oculus Rift, at least not yet.

"There seems to be a lot of excitement around something that, to me, is a yawn, frankly," he said, as chronicled by The Hollywood Reporter. Cameron, like other high-profile entertainment figures before him, questions the broad appeal of Oculus Rift.

"If you want to move through a virtual reality it's called a video game, it's been around forever" -- James Cameron

"The question that always occurred to me is, when is it going to be mature, when is it going to be accepted by the public at large, when are people going to start authoring in VR, and what will that be?" Cameron said.

He also said that he has not yet seen a VR application that allows the user to do much more than look around a virtual world--video games have done this for long time now, he said.

"What will the level of interactivity with the user be other than just 'I can stand and look around,'" he said, adding: "If you want to move through a virtual reality it's called a video game, it's been around forever."

Though he sounded pessimistic about Oculus Rift, he ended his thoughts by saying, "offhandedly" according to The Hollywood Reporter, that "Oculus Rift is fine. It's good a good display and that sort of thing."

Just this week, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, whose company paid $2 billion to acquire Oculus Rift creator Oculus VR earlier this year, said it could be "a bunch of years" before VR tech sees widespread adoption.

The Crew Xbox One, PS4 Beta Coming Next Month

Ubisoft's upcoming ambitious open-world racing game The Crew does not launch until December, but some Xbox One and PlayStation 4 users can play it next week.

The publisher has announced that a second beta for The Crew will be held on both platforms November 6-10. It is a closed beta, but there are multiple ways to get in. You can either preorder the game to guarantee yourself a place in the beta (North America only), or you can put your name on the waitlist at The Crew's website right here.

The beta will let players race through the entire United States, Ubisoft says, though they can only complete challenges in two of the five regions available in the full game: the Midwest and East Coast. The Crew's beta will also offer competitive races, where players can enter PvP lobbies to go head-to-head with other real-world racers.

Customization options are also available in the beta, though they are limited to the Street and Dirt spec classes. In the full game, a total of five spec classes will be available.

Ubisoft says The Crew's closed beta is available to all Xbox Live and PlayStation Network players, though "some online features" require an Xbox Live gold or PlayStation Plus membership.

The first closed beta for The Crew was held in September on Xbox One and PS4, while PC players got to try the game even earlier. The Crew is also coming to Xbox 360, but Ubisoft has not announced plans to offer a beta on that platform. A PlayStation 3 version of The Crew is not in the works.

The upcoming beta is not the only way to play The Crew ahead of launch, as the racing game is currently out on a college football tour across the United States.

Destiny DLC "The Dark Below" Launches December 9, Raises Level Cap

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 29 Oktober 2014 | 19.51

Activision and Bungie today announced that the first expansion for Destiny--called The Dark Below--will launch on December 9 across all platforms. It features new weapons and gear, as well as fresh story, co-op, and multiplayer activities. See below for full details on The Dark Below.

"Destiny was created as a living universe, which has allowed us to improve the experience post launch in real-time," Bungie president Harold Ryan said in a statement. "It also gives us insight into the things players are looking for in new content. We've seen from feedback that people want new activities, gear and weapons, and of course the immensely popular Raid. The community helps shape our development decisions and that's really important to us."

Courtesy of Activision, The Dark Below will contain the following:

  • New weapons, armor, and gear to earn, including Legendary and Exotic items
  • Light Level cap raised to 32 and five additional Bounty slots added
  • New story quests and missions--after years hiding amongst the Hive shadows, a new character, Eris, has come forth bearing an ominous warning: The Hive seek to summon a god, Crota, to destroy the Earth. Find Eris in the Tower to take on special quests that include three new missions where you will increase your Light and earn new rewards
  • New cooperative Strike, The Will of Crota, pits you and your Fireteam against Omnigul as she works to expand the Hive army at the command of her master, Crota
  • Three new competitive multiplayer arenas
  • Pantheon--set deep within the Black Garden in an ancient Vex temple that features Vex-designed landscapes and tight corridors
  • Skyshock--an old interplanetary defense array that offers both vehicle and infantry engagements
  • The Cauldron--an abandoned Hive ritual site that offers close-quarter combat
  • New six-player Raid, Crota's End, set deep within the depths of the Hellmouth
  • PlayStation platforms will also get access to an exclusive cooperative Strike, The Undying Mind, and more (timed exclusive until at least Fall 2015)

The Dark Below is the first of two announced Destiny expansions included with the game's $35 DLC pass. If you don't own the pass, you can buy The Dark Below for $20. The next expansion is called House of Wolves, though Bungie has not announced what it will feature or when it will be released.

Capcom Revenue and Profit Falls Due to Lack Of New Games

Resident Evil publisher Capcom has announced financial performance for the first half of its financial year and the results were down overall. The publisher hauled ¥25.9 billion ($239.6 million) in revenue during the period, which is down 51.3 percent compared to the same period last year. Profits were down as well, coming in at ¥2.9 billion ($26.8 million), a drop of 39.9 percent compared to last year.

The earnings reflect sales in the six-month period from April 1, 2014 to September 30, 2014.

Dead Rising 3 continued to sell well during the period

Capcom attributed the downturn in part to having no major titles released during the period, compared to last year, when it launched 3DS game Monster Hunter 4 to strong sales. Some bright spots during the quarter, however, were Ultra Street Fight IV and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, which posted "steady sales." Meanwhile, Dead Rising 3 "continued to do well" across Xbox One and PC, Capcom said.

Other titles that performed "solidly" were Monster Hunter Frontier G and iOS game Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. "However, no major new titles were released in this period, so sales focused on existing products," the publisher explained.

Capcom's video game business unit, which it calls "Digital Contents," posted even worse results than the company did overall. Revenue was ¥13.5 billion ($124.9 million), down 64.1 percent compared to last year. Meanwhile, operating income was ¥2.1 billion ($19.4 million), a drop of 60 percent compared to last year.

All of Capcom's other businesses (Arcade Operations, Amusement Equipments, and Other) also posted year-over-year declines.

Looking ahead, Capcom has a number of high-profile games in the works, including free-to-play PlayStation 4 title Deep Down, as well as Resident Evil: Revelations 2 and a Resident Evil remake for consoles and PC. A new Resident Evil movie and TV show are also in production.

Nintendo President Returns to Work Following Tumor Removal

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has returned to work following surgery in June where doctors removed a tumor from his bile duct. Speaking today during Nintendo's latest earnings presentation, Iwata said he is now feeling healthy enough to return to his normal work obligations.

According to Reuters, Iwata said he lost weight but feels healthier overall. Nintendo's profit turnaround probably made him feel better, too. Today's appearance was Iwata's first in front of reporters since the surgery, which caused him to miss E3 and other financial presentations.

As Reuters points out, Iwata has faced increased scrutiny regarding his longheld stance to develop Nintendo games only for its own consoles and not mobile devices such as iPhones and tablets.

However, Iwata's vision for Nintendo is now proving somewhat successful, as the Mario maker today announced a profit for the latest reporting period during which Wii U sales doubled.

PS4 Suspend/Resume Feature Not Cancelled, Says Sony

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 28 Oktober 2014 | 19.51

Sony still plans to release a PlayStation 4 feature that allows players to suspend and resume games near-instantly at the touch of the power button.

The corporation first discussed the Suspend/Resume technology in February 2013, during the PlayStation 4 reveal event, where it said that players could pause a game by powering down the console and recommence when booting up.

However, more than 18 months since, Sony has yet to finish developing the feature, and tends to not discuss it publicly.

But during a recent press event where Sony revealed the latest features of its PS4 2.0 update, the corporation confirmed it is still working on the technology, though didn't elaborate any further.

The PS4 Masamune update is now live in the US and UK, and introduces a number of new features such as YouTube video uploading, enhanced voice commands and Share Play.

No More Half-Naked Twitch Streaming

Popular video streaming service Twitch has updated its "Rules of Conduct" to specify that it will no longer allow streams where the broadcaster is half-naked or fully nude.

"Nerds are sexy, and you're all magnificent, beautiful creatures, but let's try and keep this about the games, shall we?" Twitch said on its website.

Twitch specified that wearing only your birthday suit, or clothing that is "sexually suggestive"--this includes lingerie, swimsuits, pasties, and undergarments--is prohibited. Fully nude torsos (this applies to both male and female streamers) are also prohibited.

"You may have a great six-pack, but that's better shared on the beach during a 2-on-2 volleyball game blasting 'Playing with the Boys," Twitch said.

In the case that you're broadcasting from a sweltering hot location, Twitch says men are OK to play shirtless and women in a bikini so long as your webcam is cropped to your face.

This is not the first time Twitch has addressed the matter of naked streaming. In November 2013, Twitch reiterated its stance on non-gaming videos following multiple instances of lewd behavior, including one video where a man stripped his partner naked in front of the camera.

Twitch was acquired by online retail giant Amazon in August in a deal worth $970 million.

Rumored Xbox One App Lets You Order Domino's Pizza From Your Couch

Pizza giant Domino's is preparing to launch an Xbox One app that allows you to order pizza from your couch. That's according to The Sunday Times (via Polygon), which says the app is optimized for Kinect, letting users say "Domino's, feed me!" to start the pizza-making journey.

The Domino's app will reportedly function as a version of its existing mobile app and web experience, where you can complete your order without talking to a human. The report claims an official announcement of the app will be made sometime in November.

Recently, Domino's updated its iOS and Android app to allow voice-controlled ordering.

If this all sounds familiar, it's because Microsoft and pizza chain Pizza Hut previously partnered for an Xbox 360 app that let users order pizza through the console.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Dev on Leak -- "That Sucks"

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 27 Oktober 2014 | 19.51

THIS POST CONTAINS POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR CALL OF DUTY: ADVANCED WARFARE.

With just one week to go before Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's release on November 3 (through the Day Zero Edition), footage of Sledgehammer Games' shooter has emerged online. Leaks are nothing new for video games, of course, but footage that appeared on Twitch this weekend was from a "stolen" version of the game, according to co-founder Glen Schofield.

Schofield addressed the leak on Twitter.

One of Schofield's fans replied by saying that Sledgehammer is responsible for the mass levels of hype around Advanced Warfare, and that the leak actually helps players get information about the game. Schofield replied: "I realize that but stealing and releasing is not the answer."

The leak is particularly problematic, Schofield added, because "discovery while playing is part of the fun." Though he seemed upset over the leak, he's also taking everything in stride. After all, this isn't his first rodeo. "It will all be good, just saying," Schofield concluded.

Yesterday, Twitch user Anfuny29 (as reported by MP1st) broadcasted Advanced Warfare from an early copy of the upcoming shooter. The stream (and the channel, too) were swiftly shut down, but not before new gameplay features such as a 30-kill "DNA Bomb" scorestreak were revealed. If you manage to rack up 30 kills in one life, you'll activate the bomb that will leave behind a "green mist" that spreads throughout the entire map before dissipating. Effects of the mist are unknown, but presumably it will have a damaging effect on your enemies.

It is unclear how the Twitch user was able to get a copy of the game ahead of its release or if Advanced Warfare publisher Activision plans to pursue any legal action against the streamer.

Advanced Warfare officially launches on November 4, but if you preorder the game, you'll be able to play a day earlier. For more on Advanced Warfare, which is coming to Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

UK Charts: FIFA 15's Winning Streak Continues

FIFA 15 proved its resilience again as the soccer sim's run atop of the UK all-format chart entered its fifth week. Publisher Electronic Arts has taken 18 number one spots this year already, nearly double what it achieved in the entirety of 2013.

Further down, the acclaimed Wii U exclusive Bayonetta 2 enters at seventh place. Due to the Wii U's small install base in the UK, seventh place during a busy period may be considered a success by Nintendo. In December, the flagship Wii U game of 2013, Super Mario 3D World, debuted at 14th place in the chart.

Elsewhere in the charts the furniture has shuffled. The Evil Within drops to third, Destiny climbs to forth, Shadow of Mordor slips to fifth, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel falls to sixth, Forza Horizon 2 dips to eighth, Alien: Isolation tumbles to ninth, while Skylanders Trap Team rises to tenth.

The most notable change is the 82 percent boost in sales for Minecraft: Playstation Edition, bouyed by strong sales of the PS4 version, and ascending to second place.

Elsewhere, new PC entry Civilization: Beyond Earth enters at eighteenth, though the charts do not yet measure digital downloads.

The UK top-ten chart follows:

  1. FIFA 15
  2. Minecraft: PlayStation Editions
  3. The Evil Within
  4. Destiny
  5. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
  6. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
  7. Bayonetta 2
  8. Forza Horizon 2
  9. Alien: Isolation
  10. Skylanders Trap Team

GTA 5 Runs at 1080p on PS4, Report Claims

The PlayStation 4 version of Grand Theft Auto 5 will render at 1080p, according to a new report.

Although Rockstar Games has not officially discussed the specs for its next-gen crime-opus, the UK publication Official PlayStation Magazine has made unequivocal claims regarding its resolution.

The publication writes: "Glimmering 1080p presentation, hugely increased draw distance, 100 new songs, fresh wild-life, a bumper version of GTA Online, this is sandbox you've dreamt about ever since you slotted Sony's angular baby under your TV."

It adds: "Farewell 720p. You served your purpose adequately enough. Still, our eyes have been gagging for 1080p's pin-sharp pleasures and the Los Santos sandbox is only too happy to oblige on PS4, running at a native 1920x1080 pixels."

The article's author writes that distant billboards "pop with clarity" and that "texture assets have been reworked across the entire game."

GameSpot has contacted Rockstar Games for comment. A representative for Official PlayStation Magazine was unable to elaborate on the matter.

The GTA 5 release date falls on November 18 for PS4 and Xbox One. The GTA V PC release date has been delayed to January 27.

Rockstar says the next-gen editions of its multi-million selling blockbuster will benefit from a number of technical improvements, such as enhanced detail and longer draw distances.

Additional features for both the next-gen and PC versions include:

  • New weapons, vehicles and activities
  • Additional wildlife
  • Denser traffic
  • New foliage system
  • Enhanced damage and weather effects

Those who pre-order the next-gen and PC versions will also receive $1,000,000 in-game bonus cash to spend across Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online.

As previously speculated, the development team at Rockstar North will also bolster its in-game radio stations with more than 100 new songs and new DJ mixes.

Meanwhile, for the next-gen versions of GTA Online the player count has increased, allowing up to 30 players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. All existing gameplay upgrades and content released on GTA Online will also be available on the next-gen and PC editions, with Rockstar pledging "much more to come."

See below for the latest batch of GTA V screens for next-gen consoles.

You can now play Payday 2 as John Wick, actor Keanu Reeves' character from his recently released movie of the same name.

"We continue working with great partners, this time with Lionsgate and their movie John Wick," Starbreeze Chief Executive Officer Bo Andersson Klint said. "We've finally got a real hitman on our team. Being able to play as John Wick in Payday 2 ahead of the movie's release is a great reward for our loyal Payday 2 community, which reached the final milestone of 1.5 million members in our Payday 2 Steam group before our 12-day Crimefest event."

In addition to the new playable character, the free DLC includes a Hitman perk deck that gives you the ability to dual wield weapons, a new Chimano Compact pistol, dozens of modifications for said pistol, a new knife, and three new sunglasses, one just for Wick and two that all characters can use.

Finally, if you're planning on seeing John Wick anyway but don't already own Payday 2, consider purchasing your tickets through Fandango, which will come with a free copy of the game via Steam.

Watch Project Cars' Spooky Realistic Halloween Trailer

Developer Slightly Mad Studios and publisher Bandai Namco have released a new Halloween trailer for Project Cars, which shows off the racing game's nighttime and severe weather conditions.

Project Cars trailers always look impressive, but this latest video, which is made up entirely of gameplay footage, is one of the best looking ones yet. With the appropriately spooky darkness, headlights, and rain-slick roads, you can really get a good idea of how impressive the lighting in the game is.

Slightly Mad Studios says that this exemplifies its approach to development, which is not to just put things in the game because they look pretty, but because they impact gameplay as well. Racing at night and under severe weather conditions, especially in a tight pack of cars, it says, will provide an extra challenge.

Project Cars is coming to PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Slightly Mad Studios recently confirmed that it pushed the game's release date to March 20, 2015 in order to avoid the busy holiday season, when bigger, more established franchises will release their new games and potentially steal the spotlight.

GTA 5 PS4 Bundle Coming to Japan

@Tiwill44 People are still going to buy what they want. I really want to play Bayonetta 2, but I'm not buying a Wii U this year for one game, and X1 won't have anything I care about until next year. I'm a big GTA fan, so a PS4 bundle appeals to people like me who are already in the market for a PS4. It's actually a smart move on their part, because even if they don't release in the US, they're going after a market that loves Sony, but not usually a big market for GTA releases.

It's so strange how people are talking bad about Sony when it comes to exclusives. Sony fans don't mind waiting a bit, because it's still early and they know Sony will have a ton of great exclusives like every generation. Same thing as Wii U. Microsoft is doing good with exclusives this generation, but Sony and Nintendo always have great exclusives. No reason to worry. This is just a great generation for gaming. Last gen I sold my 360 pretty quickly, but this is the generation to have all three and PC.

Neverending Nightmares Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 25 Oktober 2014 | 19.51

There's an elite brand of horror that, even in these glory days when players are drowning in utterly terrifying interactive experiences, is rare to see, and harder to pull off, and that is the horror of the self. That is, the terror that comes not from a malignant, malicious invader that must be put down, but from witnessing perversions and desecrations beyond imagining, and realizing you're responsible for such terror, and you have to forever change to keep it at bay. This is the territory that Silent Hill 2 occupies, and it's one of only a few games to get it exactly right.

Neverending Nightmares is a solemn attempt to flourish in that territory, and it has the right ideas. It's the story of a young man named Thomas who is stuck in a seemingly eternal Inception-style loop of visceral Edward Gorey nightmares. His own house is slowly overtaken by living, ominous shadows and dolls with frozen smiles whose eyes follow him when he walks by. He finds himself in an asylum overrun by straight-jacketed cannibals and with haphazardly-piled mutilated dead in the hallways. Dead women rain from the sky in a cemetery while birds feed on the corpses. There are common elements in each scenario, but the omnipresent one is the ephemeral specter of a black-haired girl. The girl takes many forms: sister, wife, psychiatrist, daughter, china doll, bride, and, not least of all, bloody, knife-wielding murderwoman. She is both the reason to press on and the reason to want to escape every nightmare Thomas finds himself in. But you don't escape. You simply… persist.

Spot the creepy ghost lady, win a prize.

The devil is quite literally in the details in Neverending Nightmares. As you explore, a room might be little more than a bunch of family paintings, or a benign toy chest in a corner, or a sterile bathroom. Returning to that same room later, the wallpaper might have turned into deathly skulls, or the expression on the doll's face turned to terror; random blood stains might've appeared, or you might hear random whispers, crying, and screams off in the distance. When Neverending Nightmares is at its best, it's a sort of hellish Gone Home, where opening a new door means falling forever, having your Achilles tendons slashed, ripping out your own veins like string cheese; and making progress towards a new nightmare is indistinguishable from abject failure until you notice the change in the air, a different set of taunting voices. It's a perfect storm of fear: You are free to explore yet claustrophobically trapped, all at once.

This dichotomy would create a distressing combination even if movement weren't so restricted. Thomas' regular gait when walking is a limping shuffle that makes simple walks down a hallway feel like roaming 40 years in a desert. Yes, you have the ability to run, but Thomas apparently has the stamina of a chain-smoker with one lung, and you can get maybe five seconds of sprinting out of him before he's exhausted. It adds a nice layer of tension to the game's many terrifying chases, but when it takes forever to get from point A to B, tension turns into flat annoyance.

Worst. Slumber party. Ever.

The monotony isn't helped by the fact that Neverending Nightmares is such a sparse game. After knowing what's scattered around each environment, you can go for stretches where you're walking in and out of doors with nothing happening, nothing having changed, and with nothing new to interact with. The intent seems to be to give the player breathing room before going in for the scare, but it feels more artificial. Bad dreams typically aren't characterized by moments of lukewarm emptiness, and the fact that there are many here distracts.

What dreams do have, however, is abstraction, and Neverending Nightmares excels here. The game speaks in the broken dream language of trauma and internalized pain like few games do, and the facts of Thomas continually murdering himself, being marauded by defective babies, or seeing the girl dead in so many configurations are meant to walk the careful line between subtext and text. You are meant to put the pieces together, and the more the game feeds you on the far extremes of violence and sadness, the less it makes sense. Are you watching a man who killed a loved one and can no longer rest? Are you watching a brother stuck in purgatory for attempting suicide? Are you seeing the aftereffects of a parent grieving a dead child? The emotions are clearly represented: Fear, grief, surrender, self-loathing, and doubt.

Protip: Anything she found here is terrifying. Please don't follow her.

What those emotions are in aid of is the pertinent question, and it's a haunting one, which the game's multiple endings do muddled work in answering, to both the game's benefit and detriment. You walk away with heady questions about what you've played. What you might not come away with is satisfaction. Despite being only a one-to-two- hour game, it feels like a long way to get to either of the three finish lines; even trying for a second ending feels like work, and at least one of the endings puts far too easy a cap on what came before to feel true to the preceding hour.

And yet, having slept on it, I find myself obsessing over the questions raised, and the imagery foisted upon me by the encroaching darkness, than I have with any game in recent memory. Its frustrations are many, but they are not what sticks in the mind after it's done. Neverending Nightmares might be a dream only worth taking once, but once is all it needs to work its ill upon you.

Weekly Recap: Huge Titanfall Update, Sunset Overdrive Is 900p, and Jade Raymond Leaves Ubisoft

(Some Of) The Big Stuff:

Ten-year Ubisoft veteran Jade Raymond left the French video game giant this week. She produced the original Assassin's Creed, its sequel, and various entries in the Splinter Cell series. Most recently, she worked on Watch Dogs and was general manager of Ubisoft Toronto. She called the decision to leave Ubisoft "one of the hardest decisions" of her career. No word yet on what she's doing next. Her replacement is Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six veteran Alexandre Parizeau.

Sunset Overdrive creative director Marcus Smith this week explained why the upcoming Xbox One runs in 900p, not 1080p. He said developer Insomniac Games had the game running at 1080p at one point, but decided to shift to 900p so it could create a level of on-screen mayhem that would make Transformers director Michael Bay proud.

On Wednesday, Respawn Entertainment provided details on Titanfall's biggest ever update. The wide-ranging update will include multiple new game modes, including a co-op, horde-style mode that you can play against AI, and not real-world players. Be sure to read our detailed coverage of the update to get up-to-speed with everything the update introduces. It's available today on Xbox One and PC.

The Other Stuff (Stories We Like, But Didn't Cover With a Standalone Post):

Pronographic website YouPorn is getting into gaming. The site says that after fielding "hundreds" of requests (who knows how many were actually serious) it is close to reaching a sponsorship deal with an eSports team. There are quite a few sex jokes to make here.

Halloween is nearly here, and Disney is celebrating by updating its mobile games with new features and functionality focused around the freaky holiday. Marvel Puzzle Quest is getting a spooky new character called Blade on October 24, while a new mission is coming to Marvel: Avengers Alliance that sees players fighting off a demonic threat.

Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey says in a wide-ranging and fascinating interview with Smithsonian that when the Oculus Rift consumer version is eventually released, it won't be perfect. But that's OK, because the Ford Model T wasn't either, he says. "This is the Model T," he said. "We want to be where the Tesla is eventually. What we have now is something that's affordable, that's good enough for people, and that will be able to sustain the growth that's needed to get to the Tesla."

Who will win next week's UFC 179 featuring fighters Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo? EA Sports simulated the bout in EA Sports UFC, and Aldo came out on top, finishing off Mendes with ground and pound moves to win his seventh consecutive title. We'll find out if EA was right when the actual fight takes place Saturday, October 25 at the Ginasio do Maracanazinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Mass Effect's Commander Shepard has killed more than 300,000 people. That's according to an in-depth analysis done by one super-dedicated fan. Writing on Reddit, user mocha820 reports in extremely detailed depth about how many people Shepard killed in Mass Effect 1-3 and all of the game's DLC. The total bodycount is even broken down by race and faction.

Remember that awesome arcade game Time Crisis? It's coming back! Bandai Namco's classic light gun franchise is returning to arcades in March 2015 in the form of Time Crisis 5. Per a new report from Polygon, the new game will feature left and right foot pedals, which will allow you to flank enemies. The game will be played on 55-inch monitors, and the gun controller will allow you to cycle through weapons. The Time Crisis series debuted in 1996, and the most recent release was 2006's Time Crisis 4.

A new report from security solutions company Symantec reveals what you probably already knew: gamers are a top target for DDoS attacks. "Short DDoS attacks against competing players are unfortunately very popular among online gamers," Symantec writes in the full report.

Expansion alert! Boston-based indie studio Disruptor Beam this week announced (and released) the first expansion for mobile and Facebook Game of Thrones Ascent. It's called The Long Night, and it features a new World Event, new Alliance tactics system, and new quests and items. You can read more about The Long Night in a blog post here.

Think you're good at Tetris? You might be, but you aren't better than Harry Hong. He won the recently concluded Annual Classic Tetris World Championship, which took place in Oregon. Gamers from around the world competed in round after round of 8-bit Tetris on NES. After two days of qualifying rounds, Hong--who hails from Los Angeles--took home the crown. He cleared more lines of Tetriminos (the name of the falling shapes) and scored more points than everyone else. For his victory, he won $1,000 in prize money and a grand prize trophy. Nice work!

There's no NHL 2K game on consoles or PC this year, but now you can play NHL 2K on the go. 2K Sports this week released the game for iOS and Android. You can buy the game, developed in-hour at Visual Concepts, for $8. 2K Sports calls the game a "full-featured professional hockey game" and it includes a My Career mode, live roster updates, asynchronous multiplayer, and classic modes such as NHL Winter Classic and Free Skate.

A group of filmmakers are looking to make a Legend of Zelda parody movie in the vein of Family Guy's Star Wars episode, Blue Harvest. They've turned to Kickstarter to help fund their dreams, asking for $225,000 to make the project a reality. So far, they've raised just over $500. You can read more about the campaign here.

Microsoft announced this week that all 104 Microsoft Stores will celebrate the release of Xbox One game Sunset Overdrive with launch parties kicking off at 10 PM on Monday, October 27. Attend one of the events and you'll get to play the game early, take part in special giveaways, and more. Plus, be one of the first 25 to show up and buy a copy of the game and you'll receive special Sunset Overdrive swag.

A group of Spanish video game developers this week launched a Kickstarter campaign for a Christian-themed mobile game called A Journey Towards Jesus for iOS and Android. They're looking for $8,500 to make the project a reality, and have so far received over $3,400 in pledges. "We believe that Christian content available for mobile devices is scarce and sometimes poorly designed," the developers say. "Young people have many ways to spend their free time. Unfortunately there are currently few Apps that serve to evangelize, teach and entertain them. Our idea: Why not create quality Christian Apps, so that all interested young people can have fun while learning more about the Word of God?"

Time for another Super Meat Boy game? Maybe. Probably not. Who knows. But the studio behind the 2010 game made a tease on Twitter this week, saying: "4 years ago today Super Meat Boy was born. Since then the world has been constantly going down hill. Time for another Meat Boy game I think." I personally would not object. How about you?

Interested in the history of video game development? A pretty neat new interactive graphic from PriceSpy lets you explore the history of famous game developers, including information about where and when they got started, what they created, and lots more. See it here.

A new professional study from Ryerson University suggests that kids eat less after playing video games such as Angry Birds. On average, children consume 50 fewer calories at mealtime compared to when they didn't play video games, the study found. Reading this made me hungry, so I guess I should now go play video games.

The World Series started this week, and it's now been revealed that the Kansas City Royals' love for Supercell's mobile hit Clash of Clans nearly ruined the team's season. The team got so swept up playing the game that they often played in the locker room instead of devoting their energy to improving their real-world baseball game. It all worked out in the end, though, as the Royals are now playing against the San Francisco Giants for a World Championship.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Preorder Bonuses

With a near-future take on military combat, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the latest in the long-running COD shooter franchise. This year's entry is in development by Sledgehammer games, and to get you in on the game early, the company has put together a wide range of pre-order incentives.

Eschewing the normal trend of retailer-specific offers, the bulk of the game's exclusive content will be available to everyone:

  • Advanced Arsenal -- This pre-order pack consists of two cosmetic items: items the Bullet-Brass exoskeleton and the Bullet-Brass EM1 Quantum
  • Day Zero Edition -- Everyone who pre-orders the game gets the Day Zero edition which includes: Access to the game 24 hours early on November 3, Two bonus weapons (AK-12G Assault Rifle and the Crossbow-B2), and double XP on November 3

But that doesn't mean that some stores aren't also trying to entice you in. Here are the current store-specific pre-order bonuses:

Outside of the pre-order bonuses, there's also:

And you don't want to forget that the game also has an ongoing cross-buy promotion. Until March 31, if you buy Advanced Warfare digitally on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, you'll be able to get a copy of of the next-gen version for free. Multiplayer stats and gear, as well as downloadable content you've purchased, including the season pass, will carry over.

The final point to think about if you're considering purchasing Advanced Warfare is how quickly you want access to the game's downloadable content. As has been the case since Black Ops in 2010, Xbox owners will have first crack at Advanced Warfare's DLC, but it will still make its way to other platforms.

Legend of Grimrock 2 Review

It's fitting that the music first greeting you in Legend of Grimrock II is a rousing, bombastic tune that would just as easily be at home in a summer fantasy blockbuster. The sequel is a grand adventure, a far cry from the claustrophobic tunnels of its predecessor's excellent first-person, tile-based dungeon-crawling revival. And while the suffocating atmosphere of the franchise's first entry has been diluted by a focus on exploration rather than escape, its mechanics and well-crafted content have flourished and been improved in almost every way. Legend of Grimrock II is a logical and brilliantly executed next step for the series, exhibiting slight symptoms of too much freedom, but never stumbling for long.

Grimrock II has little to do with the mountain peak in the game's title; rather, it serves as reassurance that the formula defined decades ago, and modernized in the original Grimrock, still elegantly drives the experience. You fashion a party of adventurers with classic Dungeons & Dragons character trappings and step through unexplored three-dimensional terrain one tile at a time. Along the way, you acquire armor, weapons, and artifacts of increasing prowess, outfitting each of your characters to do real-time battle against a bestiary of monstrous creatures. You trigger fatally hidden traps, avoid the obvious ones, and search for vital clues to unlock gates and doorways, while solving riddles and puzzles in a quest for answers to larger mysteries and the almighty pursuit of power itself.

Giant rats are so 1990. It's all about pirate rats now.

Legend of Grimrock II shirks the longstanding reliance on subterranean labyrinths that have so-well suited the genre; instead, it pulls a new foursome of characters to the Isle of Nex, and the welcome addition of outdoor locales. From the temperate woodlands of Twigroot Forest to the noxious vapors of Keelbreach Bog, each environment carries a unique personality, and together they create a more diverse setting than the original's endless halls of stone and darkness. Of course, thousands of steps are still waiting to be taken in decrepit dungeons and tight tunnels, but the promise of returning to the fresh air of the surface alleviates the impenetrable gloom of underground life. Even returning to an open sky of a pitch black night--thanks to the great addition of a day and night cycle--feels like a safe haven from the skittering terrors that roam the chasms below."

The openness of the island setting is mirrored in the game's navigation. Shortly after your arrival on Nex, you're free to traverse nearly anywhere you can see, assuming you can unlock the barriers to entry and survive your own curiosity. To that point, there's a naural sense of progression in Grimrock II: it gently guides you through each new zone without spelling out an optimal order for visiting them. Should you somehow decipher the means to wander into territory too dangerous for your fledgling skills, that gentle hand becomes a clenched fist, ready to immediately bludgeon your party for its foolhardiness--but the option exists, and that non-linearity is refreshing.

Returning to an open sky in a pitch black night--thanks to the great addition of a day and night cycle--feels like a safe haven from the skittering terrors that roam the chasms below.

Unfortunately, that freedom of choice and ambiguous direction is where Grimrock II briefly falters. Much of the adventure hinges on the collection of scattered MacGuffins, conveniently spaced and designed to require the exploration of every area in order to chase them all down. In fact, the journey from your shipwrecked landing to the heart of the mystery is largely devoid of overarching narrative until the climax. What little references there are to a grander scheme are delivered in coy notes from an unknown master of this undiscovered island.

It's understandable that a focused narrative pushing you from one area to the next might hamper your ability to freely navigate the isle, but the chosen alternative is a nearly blind journey requiring a herculean effort and an enormous amount of good faith that it's going to pay off in the end--which it thankfully does. Instead, the real story takeaway is found in the immaculately designed riddles, puzzles, and moments of sometimes-not-so-near fatal choice that punctuate every step of the adventure.

Developer Almost Human has deftly crafted dozens of bite-sized, standalone engagements that are often vague, frequently complex, and always clever. And it's in these moments, when you're stuck wondering how exactly the provided clues don't point to the seemingly obvious conclusion, that you might truly appreciate the openness of a world that allows you to go off and perform some other task while you let all the elements of a particularly devious obstacle simmer in the back of your mind.

Word of advice: Don't fall in the pit full of zombies, aka, the Zombie Pit.

Overcoming the many vague riddles in Legend of Grimrock II is occasionally grueling, but to Almost Human's great credit, the answers are nearly always rooted in logic or interpretation, rather than finding some minute trigger on a wall. Oh, there are many secrets on Nex that are only uncovered with a keen eye, say, scrutinizing a sea of stone for the smallest switch, but these instances are almost exclusively tied to superfluous loot rather than vital game progression.

The vein of thoughtful improvement running through Legend of Grimrock II may be most apparent in its intricately designed quandaries, but it snakes through even the most basic elements of the franchise. Character creation, the cornerstone of the dungeon-crawling experience, exhibits a comparable leap forward. Where the original Grimrock opted for a trifecta of class selections--Fighter, Rogue, and Mage--the second offering builds on that trinity, filling the spaces between with new and unique roles. Choose to crush monsters through the Barbarian's brute force, strike a balance between marshal and mystical arts with a Battlemage, or brew life-saving concoctions with collected herbs as an Alchemist. All are viable additions to a budding party, though in practice, some classes are clearly more beneficial than others.

The real story takeaway is found in the immaculately designed riddles, puzzles, and moments of sometimes-not-so-near fatal choice that punctuate every step of the adventure.

In another sly wink poking fun at the tropes of the genre, there's even a Farmer class, which excels in absolutely nothing you'd want in an adventurer and gains experience not by killing enemies but by eating food. It's these small touches of playful meta--for example, some races gain hidden statistical benefits after ingesting their preferred foods, and the new Ratling race has a special affinity for cheese--that paint Grimrock II as a creation that's totally comfortable in its own skin while still true to the dungeon crawling mantle of yore.

But while an old-school spirit might power the core, the vessel is a more modern, expanded take on the experience than even the original Grimrock had to offer. The addition of weapon-specific special attacks adds a welcome layer of depth to combat; by drawing from your characters' energy pools, you're able to trigger devastating blows with titanic axes, or launch a flurry of slashes with a sabre. Moreover, the overhauled spell casting system allows you to quickly swipe across runes to prime a spell, replacing the cumbersome need to click each individual one. Now you can engage in combat that is fluid and interactive, rather than just repeatedly hacking at something until one of you squeals and collapses.

Better still, when paired with the active and passive bonuses of available skills and traits, each character can potentially attain enough unique purpose that fights are often elevated from slugfests to battles of timing, positioning, and resourcefulness. The appointed leader of my party, Arielle the Knight, started as the tough-as-nails tank, but somewhere during my 30-hour adventure she learned to dual-wield rune-adorned scimitars, backstabbing unsuspecting enemies in her impractically bulky armor. Thanks to the untethered skill system, she did it all, and you're free to similarly build any class in any direction you choose.

Poison, petrification, disease, blindness--there's a status effect for everyone!

Combat in Grimrock II is a more refined, empowering, and choice-centric part of the experience this time around, and with good reason: The beasts that inhabit the Isle of Nex are a much more formidable breed. Mainstay monsters that have adorned the darkened hallways of grid-based crawlers for years are well-represented: giant spiders, rats, ogres, and the undead. But new to the fray are creatures that, like your characters, carry their own functional skillsets. The giant toads roaming the bog may seem straightforward, but when one leaps across several tiles, landing behind your party, lashing out with its sticky tongue and pulling your characters' weapons out of their hands, the encounter shifts dramatically in its favor. Wispy elementals patrol the forests and press their attacks, unfazed by conventional weapons and spells, and leaving you helplessly searching for a vulnerability of some kind. And amethyst-hued cycloptic floating squid-beasts spew blinding ink from both ends, disgustingly enough, in the jewel-encrusted mines beneath the surface of Nex.

These functional additions to the bestiary are fairly indicative of what you should expect from Legend of Grimrock II: A well-established foundation revisited and excellently enhanced in the years between releases. Nearly every aspect of this dense adventure has been touched in a positive way, with none of the clutter that often accompanies second-act offerings that try to cram too much in. And despite the lack of narrative, Grimrock II is an outstanding second trip to the nostalgia well. It synthesizes the key elements that made the first game great, improves upon them in intriguing and powerful ways, and uses that as a platform for designing and launching more of the same great content.

Legend of Grimrock II is similar to one of its many well-designed riddles: While solving it may be a long, arduous process, approaching each obstacle with newfound understanding and hearing the victorious click of gears finally turning gives you a feeling of profound pride and accomplishment. Legend of Grimrock II is another glorious glimpse of the past, a window to a genre dead and buried and brought back to life with care and respect, and I urge you to peek through it.

Far Cry 4's Multiplayer Mode Isn't Locked Behind A Paygate

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 23 Oktober 2014 | 19.51

Far Cry 4's multiplayer mode is not locked behind a paywall, creative director Alex Hutchinson has confirmed, following some level of confusion earlier this week.

"Just so it's clear: Multiplayer is for everyone who buys FC4, no need to buy anything else," Hutchinson said on Twitter. "There is an extra mode in DLC."

The extra mode Hutchinson is talking about is "Overrun," which is included with the $30 Far Cry 4 DLC pass. When Ubisoft announced the pass this week, it was unclear if the game was going to ship with a multiplayer mode available for people who did not own the pass.

For more on the Far Cry 4 DLC pass, check out our full write-up.

Far Cry 4 launches November 18 for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. Ubisoft said recently that it's targeting 1080p visuals for the Xbox One and PS4 versions. For more on Far Cry 4, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Smash Bros. Wii U Nintendo Direct Scheduled for Thursday

@doomsday7teen  First of all Specs do not define Generations among consoles,  They never did.  Secondly, You said it yourself that you were tricked (by great marketing) into getting a PS4 with almost no worthwhile games. The only thing that proves is how hive-minded the market and average new-breed gamer has become. Everyone will obviously get the device that is most talked about these days, even if it isn't that good.

Nintendo Didn't F'up yet, we still have a couple years to go for these new consoles. Sales may not be what they wanted for now, but they're still pumping out high quality games. If they continue to do so, then maybe, just maybe, we may see others starting to realize that it's actually a great console.

Linear Games Are "Going to Suffer" In Current Market, Far Cry 4 Dev Says

The rise in video-sharing services such as YouTube and Twitch means that linear games are "going to suffer," according to Far Cry 4 creative director Alex Hutchinson. He says in a new interview that those video services will in fact work against linear games, in that people who stream or post videos of those games will only be showcasing how repetitive they can be.

"I'm really interested in emergent games and where that's going with video sharing and Twitch," Hutchinson said in an interview with OXM. "I think linear story games are really going to suffer in the modern marketplace."

"They're already super high-quality, and we're already seeing their audiences migrate to the big, open-world games," he added. "If I open my friends list and see everybody on the same mission, doing the same thing... I think that's nowhere near as strong a sales pitch as opening your friends list and seeing 40 people doing completely different things."

Ubisoft has previously spoken about Far Cry 4 as something of an "anecdote factory"; a game that, due to its open-world and non-linear nature, will lead to "watercooler moments" of people sharing stories about what they did that often vary significantly from player to player. Far Cry 4 does have an overall narrative, but Ubisoft has stressed again and again that players will get to explore the world of Kyrat in the way that they want to.

It's not surprising to hear Hutchinson offer such emphatic praise for open-world games. After all, admiration for open-world games is seen all the way to the top of Ubisoft. CEO Yves Guillemot has said that Ubisoft is committed to making open-world games because "We think that gamers want more freedom." And due to its sprawling network of studios across the globe that can collaborate on projects, Guillemot contends that Ubisoft is one of the best publishers in the business to deliver open-world games on a regular basis.

Far Cry is just one of Ubisoft's open-world franchises. Others include Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed, and The Crew, among others.

Watch: Mario Kart 8 DLC Includes This Forgotten Double Dash Track

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 22 Oktober 2014 | 19.51

Mario Kart fans will argue to death over which game is the best in the series (a pointless endeavour considering the correct answer is 64) but there's certainly some agreement on which was the most disappointing: That old forgotten GameCube flop Double Dash.

With its bizarre z-button racer switching, its generally mangled physics, and the merciless removal of Blue Shell countermeasures, Double Dash hardly represented a vintage Mario Kart experience.

However, there were a few tracks that were pretty excellent, especially Baby Park, as well as this tough little monster:

Yoshi's Circuit is a Double Dash race course shaped as the little dinosaur fella, featuring a neat waterfall shortcut mid-way and a perilously tight corner at the end of his tail.

Now Nintendo has revealed this course has been remastered for Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, and will feature in the first of two DLC packs. Take a look at the course in the video above.

Mario Kart 8's downloadbale content will come in the form of two separate packs. New characters, tracks, and karts will be added to the game, featuring content from many of Nintendo's other franchises, including The Legend of Zelda, F-Zero, and Animal Crossing.

Each DLC pack will cost $8 (£7), while the bundle is $12 (£11) and features:

  • 3 new characters
  • 4 new vehicles
  • 8 additional courses (half new, half old)

The first of these DLC packs is expected to ship in November.

Hearthstone Delay for iPhone and Android Phones

A mobile version of the critically acclaimed collectable card game Hearthstone will not be released until 2015, its developer Blizzard Entertainment has announced.

While the PC and iPad editions have now amassed more than 20 million players worldwide, Blizzard has said it needs more time rebuilding the title for smaller mobile screens. However, the Android tablet version is still on schedule for release by the end of 2014.

"Throughout the past year, many of you have been asking about the release date for Hearthstone on Android. The team has been hard at work to bring Hearthstone to that platform, and is making great progress," reads a notice on the Hearthstone blog.

"We're taking things one step at a time and we've got our sights set on a release for Android tablets, our next new platform, before the end of the year.

"We're also close to having Hearthstone out to our iPhone and Android phone users, but it's become clear that we need a little more time to get that version right. While we have a build up and running internally, it needs a bit more work, and we don't feel like we'll be ready to share it with you until early next year."

Because a maximum of 14 cards can be played on a Hearthstone board, each with their own details and statistics, condensing this to the size of a mobile phone whilst keeping those details legible means a straightforward port is out of the question.

"It's very important to us that the phone experience for Hearthstone is just as accessible as the tablet and PC versions," Blizzard wrote.

"One of the biggest challenges with that is revamping the user interface so it feels intuitive and offers the same quality Hearthstone experience, but this time from the palm of your hand.

"Releasing Hearthstone on iPhone and Android phones is something we're incredibly excited about, but ultimately we'd rather take the extra time to make Hearthstone's user interface on the phone customized to feel great for the platform, rather than a port that doesn't take into account the limitations of a smaller screen."

Since it was formally released on PC in March, and then on iPad in April, Hearthstone has cultivated a community of hardcore and casual players, with more than 20 million people having played the game.

The free-to-play title recently expanded with the single-player Naxxramas challenges, which also included some thirty new cards. The next major update to the game, according to Blizzard, will add around 100 new cards.

Titanfall's "Biggest Update" to be Revealed Today on Twitch

Respawn Entertainment, the creators of the Xbox and PC exclusive FPS Titanfall, have announced that the game will soon be revamped with its "biggest update" yet.

On Wednesday at 10am Pacific (1pm Eastern / 6pm UK), the studio will reveal its newest update via a Twitch livestream. No further details were available, aside from Respawn's Twitter account claiming that the update will be the game's most comprehensive yet.

Since Titanfall's release in March, the game has been updated with several premium DLC map packs, as well as various other patches and small additions.

In August, a representative for Respawn claimed that, while the studio is still eager to support Titanfall, at some point the focus will need to shift to new projects.

GameSpot's Titanfall review was highly positive, writing: "Titanfall reinvents what it feels like to play a competitive shooter. The high-flying action intertwines beautifully with the brutish, tactical titan battles, creating battlefields that crackle with possibility. Titanfall is a leap forward for shooters, a game that combines the vibrant and new with the tried and true to create something special."

Xbox One Custom Backgrounds Coming via November Update

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 21 Oktober 2014 | 19.52

Microsoft has outlined numerous improvements, additions and changes coming to Xbox One via its monthly system update.

The main attraction for November is the new personalisation features, which allow users to create a customised background. The corporation adds that this was the "number one requested feature" from fans.

This comes weeks after the Xbox head, Phil Spencer, pledged to add custom theme support to Xbox One systems. Though the new update is a stepping-stone on that path, Microsoft said that "more customisation options" would arrive later. See directly below for a trio of preview images:

Gamers who have enlisted with the Xbox One preview program should be able to access the update now.

Other additions to the November update include the option to attach a "flaunt reel" to your profile. Users can display six video snippets of their gaming feats, which others can watch when browsing profiles.

Further to this, and in what could be a coup for Microsoft as it competes with Sony for relevance on social media, the Xbox One can now publish game clips directly to Twitter. In addition, Microsoft has applied a trending algorithm to its TV guide.

The system update will launch at some stage in November. A full breakdown of updates, written by Microsoft, is published below, while a video walkthrough is available in the video above.
