Major fighting game tournaments to standardize ruling for player collusion

Major tournament directors who represent events like the Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament and Final Round will be standardizing rules against player collusion.

According to a Shoryuken report, any form of collusion between competitors is considered cheating. Tournament directors who catch any competitor intentionally underperforming can disqualify them immediately.

The following North American tournaments that have agreed to this ruling include the Evolution Championship series and all Road to Evo events, Big E Gaming events like Winter Brawl, Canada Cup Gaming, Community Effort Orlando, Civil War, East Coast Throwdown, The Fall Classic, Final Round, Level|Up events, MTLSF events, Northwest Majors, Shadowloo Showdown, NorCal Regionals, Toronto Top Tiers events, Treta Championship, and the Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament.

The report also said that fighting game community sites Shoryuken and EventHubs had come to an agreement to only cover events that enforce the collusion rule. Other supporters of the new ruling include peripheral manufacturer Mad Catz.

For more information on recent fighting game events, check out GameSpot's coverage on Evo 2k13.

Street Fighter producer does not want main series to stop at IV

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 29 Juli 2013 | 19.51

Street Fighter series producer Yoshinori Ono has made it clear he does not want the main Street Fighter series to end at number IV.

An interview with 4gamer (translated by Siliconera) quotes the Street Fighter series veteran as stating, "Personally, I don't want to stop Street Fighter's main numbered series at IV,"

"Realistically speaking, developing a title for next-gen consoles requires a huge amount of staff members, and a large sum of money. The issue of money also applies to everyone else, as it'll be required to invest in a new console, game, and arcade stick." Ono said.

The issue of money has been brought up in the past, when Ono tweeted that he had no budget for a Street Fighter V on next generation consoles.

"I don't have R&D budget and staff," He said in response to a fan who asked if he was secretly working on Street Fighter V for next-gen. He further explained that his team is now focused entirely on Ultra Street Fighter IV, which was announced at EVO this year.

Ultra Street Fighter IV is in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC with no plans to bring the updated game to next-generation consoles. The game includes five new characters, six fresh stages, and a host of gameplay tweaks. For more information, check out GameSpot's interview with Capcom about the pack.

Kingdom Hearts 3 will end story arc, but not overall series

Game director Tetsuya Nomura says that upcoming sequel's gameplay will take inspiration from Kingdom Hearts 3D.

Square Enix game director Tetsuya Nomura has said in an LA Times interview that the current Kingdom Hearts story arc will end with Kingdom Hearts 3.

However, the franchise will continue after the release of the third game. Nomura explained that Kingdom Hearts 3 isn't part of a "trilogy", but added that story elements that were introduced in 2002 will be wrapped up and come to a close.

"There was never a plan [at first]. As a core game, this is finally the third, and 10 years have passed. I couldn't call this a trilogy. There have been so many spinoffs. In 'Kingdom Hearts 3,' the battles that the characters have been fighting for the past 10 years will come to a conclusion. But the series will continue. Only the particular enemy they have been fighting the past 10 years will come to an end," he said.

Nomura hinted that Kingdom Hearts 3 will head in the direction of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance from a gameplay perspective. The game's combat system was an early guide for the upcoming PS4 and Xbox One action-RPG.

Aliens: Colonial Marines was "kind of passionless" - actor Michael Biehn

The highly-panned Aliens: Colonial Marines struck Terminator and Aliens actor Michael Biehn as "kind of passionless" when he reprised his role as Corporal Hicks in the game, according to a Game Informer interview.

"I think in movies, television, and the gaming world, you get some people that are really, really passionate, and some people that are just going through the paces. [Sega and Gearbox Software] think that because they have a brand name they're going to get a hit game or hit movie out of it. That certainly was the situation on [Aliens: Colonial Marines]," he said.

The actor compared his role on A:CM with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon in the piece. He described his work on the latter with the game's creative director Dean Evans as a great experience thanks to Evans' "interesting and creative presence".

"Dean is such an interesting and creative presence. He was talking to me about the game and the fact that it was an '80s throwback, and there would be a lot of lines that were Arnold Schwarzenegger-like, that were [Sylvester] Stallone-like, Bruce Willis, myself. Those kind of lines, that kind of vibe, and the fact that it was going to be a throwback to the '80s was something that I thought was interesting. But really it was his passion, man."

Aliens: Colonial Marines was heavily criticized for its campaign mode, dated visuals and in-game bugs. A lawsuit was recently filed against Gearbox Software and Sega, accusing the companies of misrepresenting the game to consumers with false advertising.

DARK Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 27 Juli 2013 | 19.51

Can you imagine how deliciously powerful it would feel to be a vampire? Sustaining yourself on the blood of your victims, you could turn to mist and rush through the air, preying on the weak and hunting down the forces that would see the end of you and your kind. Dark hints at such an existence, but this vampire stealth game fails to make such bloodsucking dreams and nightmares come to life. Rather than pull you into the supernatural drama it tries to author, Dark devolves into unintentional comedy, the ridiculously bad dialogue and hilarious artificial intelligence inspiring fits of laughter. This game is both insane and inane, but at least its overall stupidity gives you something to cackle at.

That one guard will perform pirouettes forever and ever. He must be stopped at all costs!

The laughs start with the story, which casts you as Eric Bane, a half-vampire looking to suck the blood out of more powerful vampires before you turn into a mindless ghoul. You spend a lot of time in a nightclub called Sanctuary, where you might at first enjoy the colorful cel-shaded visuals and awkwardly dancing patrons before you start giggling at the bad dialogue. Says a vampire DJ about another powerful bloodsucker: "The women that work there for him are really f***ed up. I think he put some vampire s*** on them." Says another: "The guy more or less owns the city. He's like the vampire dictator, man." A Mass Effect-like dialogue wheel offers dialogue options, but not any actual choices, though you can string together different parts of conversation in ways that make the insipid dialogue even more nonsensical.

So off you go into the night to exercise your sneaking skills and do vampiric things, like knocking out dunderheaded rent-a-cops from behind when you aren't plunging your teeth into their necks. It's clear right away that something's amiss in Dark, however. Guards engage in conversation before beginning their patrol patterns, which is a typical atmospheric touch in stealth games, but some chats go on forever without unveiling any important truths or infusing Dark with any personality. When alerted, guards deliver canned lines that don't always make sense in context, the same snippets of recorded dialogue overlapping with each other and lone enemies calling out to nonexistent comrades. Bad animations, mediocre voice acting, jittery cutscenes, and disappearing sound effects round out the first impressions, though some nice audiovisual touches, such as the satisfying whoosh of your shadow leap ability, give you hope for the coming hours.

Unfortunately, Dark never capitalizes on its few strengths. The basic gameplay is bone-dry stealth--you crouch and hug walls, at least when the cover mechanic decides to work, while trying to avoid the none-too-watchful eyes of guards and attacking them when you need to. You may also drag corpses away if you have the opportunity, and need to avoid litter lest you call attention to yourself, though it isn't always clear whether or not nearby watchmen notice or care. There are a few visual references to Thief in the early levels, but you never need to keep to the shadows, in spite of the allusions (and in spite of this game's own name).

You also have some passive and active vampire powers that let you, for example, confuse enemies in the area for a short period of time, or rush across a good distance and assassinate a guard. You need to kill guards and read scattered personal digital assistants and emails to earn points to unlock and improve these abilities, and you drain blood from your enemies to power them. At first it's fun to fool around with these skills, since they're the only way of mixing up the generic sneaking. Flying through the air and felling the cookie-cutter character models can give you a sense of accomplishment, as can successfully sneaking through a heavily defended warehouse without alarming the sentries. But about halfway through the game, you realize that you can use your shadow leap ability to exploit your way through levels, propelling yourself onto ledges and other platforms and avoiding or eliminating entire swaths of patrols in the process.

The rotten enemy AI doesn't always hinder you; in fact, it often seems intent on assisting your efforts. For instance, you might hide in a bush, one guard after another approaching you, perhaps after seeing you lurk in the area. You can knock them out one at a time, the guards acting as if they can't figure out where that corpse came from, even after staring right at you as you performed the kill. To make matters worse, Dark draws out levels during such circumstances, spawning new guards when the AI is alerted until the supply runs out, which makes levels tedious. You even see some of these guards appear right in front of you out of nowhere, which completely corrupts the core design of a stealth game.

Elsewhere, enemies jitter in place or against each other before teleporting somewhere else--again undermining the very idea of a stealth game. Sometimes, guards get stuck standing and looking in one spot in a way that keeps you from reaching your destination. And what's really hysterical is when guards shoot at you so that you can see bullets landing on you, yet the shots don't register. The lack of continuity between checkpoints also annihilates Dark's design consistency. In certain locations, triggering a checkpoint causes all the enemies in the area you just left to disappear, only to have new enemies and characters materialize there without any explanation.

There are some good ideas in here, like machines that produce a field of UV rays that injure you and dull your vampire powers. And every so often, a level comes together, with enemy routines created in a way that allows you to satisfyingly slink by. But those bright spots are exceptions in Dark's poorly crafted areas. Some levels at first look open-ended, inviting you to experiment with different approaches, but actually push you down a single linear path, because it's the only path the AI and its rigid patterns can reasonably handle. Other levels feature a mishmash of enemies, alarms, and behaviors that seem thoughtlessly put together, inspiring you to exploit your way through rather than devise a clever plan of action.

Instead of ramping up the challenge and excitement, Dark actually gets much easier as it progresses, and the final boss fight (which involves walking around as its main mechanic) and subsequent moral choice (in which you have no emotional investment) aren't gut punches, but rather are gut-bustingly bad. In its favor, Dark mixes up its pace in the final levels, dropping some narrative surprises on you and depositing you into a few unexpected locales. But by then, you've endured too much banality for a few bewildering plot twists to suck any interest out of you, or for the stand-alone challenge levels to hold any appeal. In the dark is where this clumsy vampire game should remain.

Zynga sheds daily users as it announces $15.8m loss

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 26 Juli 2013 | 19.51

Farmville maker Zynga has announced a $15.8m loss for the second quarter of 2013, as daily users of its social games fell by 45 per cent over the last twelve months.

39m people now play Zynga titles on a daily basis, down from 72m this time last year. Alongside the drop in active daily players, the amount of people playing a Zynga game at least once a month also dropped 39 per cent year-on-year to 187m, down from 306m in the second quarter of 2012.

The social gaming giant announced revenues of $231m for the three month period ending June 30, down from $332m the year before.

Zynga released six new titles in the last quarter: Hidden Shadows, War of the Fallen, Draw Something 2, Battlestone, Solstice Arena, and Running With Friends.

Zynga has had rough time of late, and is embarking on a restructuring process that will remove 520 jobs from the company.

"The next few years will be a time of phenomenal growth in our space and Zynga has incredible assets to take advantage of the market opportunity," said former Xbox boss and now Zynga CEO Don Mattrick.

"To do that, we need to get back to basics and take a longer term view on our products and business, develop more efficient processes and tighten up execution all across the company. We have a lot of hard work in front of us and as we reset, we expect to see more volatility in our business than we would like over the next two to four quarters. I'm privileged to lead Zynga and I look forward to spending more time with our players, employees and shareholders."

Zynga previously announced a profit of $4.1m for the first quarter of the year.

World of Warcraft subscribers drop to 7.7 million

World of Warcraft has lost 700,000 players in the last three months, with the MMO now down to 7.7 million active subscribers.

Activision Blizzard reported that 8.2 million people were subscribed to World of Warcraft in March, with CEO Bobby Kotick saying that the company expects to see the number fall further throughout the year.

The decline in World of Warcraft players numbers has been previously attributed mainly to Eastern markets, although Activision did not comment specifically on this latest subscriber decline.

Activision adds that World of Warcraft remains the most popular subscription-based MMO in the world.

Subscribers for the game peaked at over 12 million in October 2010. The gargantuan MMO was originally released in 2004, and has subsequently released four expansion packs: Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria.

A World of Warcraft movie will begin filming in 2014.

World of Warcraft's latest player numbers arrive as Activision Blizzard announces it has spent $5.83 billion on company shares to secure its independence from parent company Vivendi.

Microsoft capping Xbox One Achievement updates

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 25 Juli 2013 | 19.51

Microsoft will monitor post-launch Achievement updates to ensure that players aren't "constantly overwhelmed" with moving targets, according to a report by OXM.

The Xbox creator previously announced that developers will be able to add new in-game challenges without needing to include the additional Gamerscore points as part of downloadable content packs. While these can be added on a weekly, monthly, or quarterly basis as determined by the content creators, Microsoft will be capping the frequency of the updates to avoid player annoyance, according to Xbox Live's principal program manager Chad Gibson.

"We're mindful of it, and the corollary is that with a lot of games today, three updates later, it's a nice evolution of that game--it's a different game that's been modified and adjusted, based on what people are enjoying and having fun with. And we think that Achievements should match that," he said.

"Especially if a game's been on the market for a while, and they have the opportunity to add all these new Achievements--if you start playing a game a year after it ships, there's probably 2000 Gamerscore to get for that game or more. And so, for the completionists, they're going to have more work to do."

Microsoft will be putting processes in place to ensure that the system isn't abused by those who are in control of how the points are implemented.

"We still have policies for developers to make sure that things don't get out of control. Like, we do not want a game offering 10,000 Gamerscore every day. We still have policies, so that user experiences are rational--users have an opportunity to complete everything without feeling constantly overwhelmed.

"A game developer could just take its Gamerscore budget and just, you know, dole it out every week if they wanted to. But we don't want things to be out of control from a gamer perspective. We don't want people to be constantly overwhelmed with thousands and thousands of things for this game," Gibson said.

Microsoft's next-generation console, the Xbox One, is scheduled to launch this November.

Second Borderlands 2 season pass not happening

Gearbox says that it has "been clear from the beginning" that initial season pass will only feature first four add-on campaigns.

Gamers hoping for a second season pass for loot-heavy shooter Borderlands 2 will be disappointed to hear that developer Gearbox has squashed the idea.

A Gearbox representative told Polygon that it had "been clear from the beginning" that the Borderlands 2 season pass would only have the first four add-on campaigns. This also meant that the game's upcoming Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2 and other DLC content will not be included for season pass holders.

"We were excited to give Season Pass holders $45 of value instead of the original promise of $40. Through the course of our grand experiment, we've also learned that fans are happy with an a la carte menu for DLC because they can pick and choose the content that they most want to buy and really customize their Borderlands 2 experience. They're voting with their wallets--and we are grateful that there are enough of them asking that we can justify the cost of developing the content," the representative stated.

Gearbox will continue to release DLC even after the second upgrade pack, which includes additional heads and skin packs for each available class.

Madden programmer wins $11m in EA Lawsuit

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 24 Juli 2013 | 19.51

The original programmer of the Madden NFL football games has been awarded more than $11 million in a lawsuit with Electronic Arts. Programmer Robin Antonick alleged that he was owed royalties for several EA games published between 1990 and 1996, which EA broke contract to create.

According to the case, EA and Antonick signed several contracts, one of which was a 1986 agreement that required EA to pay "royalties on any derivative works related to the original version of EA Madden, including current annual releases, and prohibits EA from using his confidential information."

The lawsuit claimed that EA had failed to pay "millions of dollars" in royalties owed and for breaking the confidentiality agreement as required by the contract.

The jury ruled that multiple EA games published between 1990-96 used similar plays and formations, and were "virtually identical" to the original Madden NFL Football game, which was developed by Antonick. As a result of the verdict, Antonick is entitled to more than $11 million.

Antonick and his attorneys will also be appealing previous rulings that saw Super Nintendo games excluded and "fraud claims from the jury deliberations". The next phase of the trial will further determine whether Antonick is entitled to a payout for games published from 1997 to present, which have earned over $3 billion in revenue.

Sony working on Gran Turismo movie - Report

Racing series Gran Turismo may be heading to the big screen, according to a report by Hollywood industry publication The Wrap.

While no official announcements have been made by Sony Pictures or Sony Computer Entertainment that the project is in active development, the site currently tips Fifty Shades of Grey producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti to lead the project. Sony executives Elizabeth Cantillon, DeVon Franklin, and Hannah Minghella will manage the film for the studio.

The film is reportedly being created to cash in on the success of fast car films, citing Universal's The Fast and the Furious series, Dreamworks' adaptation of EA's Need for Speed, and the upcoming Hot Wheels movie based on Mattel's line of popular children's toys.

The latest game in the long-running PlayStation-exclusive franchise, Gran Turismo 6, is currently slated to ship on the PS3 some time during 2013. A demo for the game was released earlier this month, while Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauch previously confirmed that the studio has a PlayStation 4 version of the game "in mind for the future".

A Sony Computer Entertainment spokesperson was unavailable to confirm the report at time of publication.

Capcom: No new Darkstalkers game planned

Low Darkstalkers Resurrection compilation sales given as reason for halt on franchise.

Capcom says that it has no plans for more Darkstalkers game in the near future.

According to a report on Siliconera, Capcom fighting game manager Matt Dahlgren said that the Darkstalkers Resurrection re-release did not meet sales expectation. There is nothing Darkstalkers on the immediate horizon for sure," he said.

Previously at New York Comic-Con 2012, Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono showed off a teaser for a new Darkstalkers game featuring the characters Demitri and Lord Raptor. Capcom also experienced lay-offs early this month, with senior vice president Christian Svensson leaving the company.

Ouya devs open up on sales figures for new console

Developers for the recently launched Ouya console voiced their opinions on Edge and Gamasutra about how each of their various titles have sold so far.

Developer Matt Thorson, who created TowerFall, said that the game performed well, selling 2000 units at $15 each. "Sales have been surprisingly high for a new game on a new console. The game has definitely proven itself on Ouya, I think there's enough demand to warrant bringing it to PC," he said.

Developer NimbleBit's title, Nimble Quest, was downloaded 6,508 times and was purchased 122 times, bringing the total profit of the game to $427. Co-founder David Marsh said that he would recommend the Ouya for indie developers who are familiar with Android and are curious about the console. "It's probably not going to be a huge source of income compared to other platforms, but it's dead easy to submit a game and get it into the store. It's the only console right now with a truly open store, which makes it interesting and worth supporting if you want to see more open platforms. It's also a great device to have just to check out all sorts of neat experimental multiplayer games that are already popping up. I think it's a step in the right direction," he said.

Knife Media's co-founder Jack Shiels said that sales for the company's game, twin-stick shooter Red, was adequate at best. "We broke even within two and a half weeks, whilst sales are currently sitting at just below 400. Right now that doesn't seem like a whole lot, but there aren't a significant amount of Ouyas out in the wild right now. I reckon by year end we will have a clearer picture," he said.

Ryan Wiemeyer, co-founder of the team The Men Who Wear Many Hats, said that the game Organ Trail sold about half of what his low-end predictions were. "Last I checked we were at 501 purchases from 13,112 downloads (a 3.8 percent attach rate). This accounts for about 0.1 percent of our total Organ Trail sales to date (which is over 400,000.) So, I don't even know if it was worth the man hours yet. Then again… Organ Trail was a pain to add controller support to and that was the bulk of the port."

For more information on the Ouya, check out GameSpot's coverage on the console.

Gearbox reveals first details on new Borderlands 2 DLC

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 20 Juli 2013 | 19.51

Earlier this month Randy Pitchford revealed that Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep would not be the last piece of downloadable content released for Borderlands 2.

Today during its PAX Australia panel, Gearbox Software announced the first details for the game's fifth expansion pack, as well as outlining free feature updates on the way.

The new DLC pack, the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2, will add 11 extra levels to the current player cap, and a new Digistruct Peak Challenge. The pack will also allow players to "over level" the game to make content more difficult for advanced players. No specific release date was given, but Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed that the pack will be out sometime before October 31 this year. The pack will not be included in the current season pass, and will cost $5. No previous DLC will be required to play.

A planned free update to Borderlands 2 is also set to increase the maximum amount of ammo players can carry, enhance the total number of available bank slots, and boost inventory capacity. All upgrades can be purchased using Eridium, the in-game upgrade resource.

The team also revealed upcoming DLC pack, T.K Baha's Bloody Harvest. The content will include throwbacks to The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned DLC released for the original Borderlands. The pack will conclude with a boss battle against pumpkin creature, Jacques O'Lantern.

Pitchford confirmed that while some DLC has been in development since Borderlands 2 went on sale, beyond today's announcement, the team is aiming to release one or two more packs in the future.

Gearbox working on HD remake of Homeworld series

HD and classic versions of the space strategy series coming to Steam; no release date announced.

Gearbox Software has revealed plans to remaster classic space strategy series Homefront, and bring the games to digital platforms.

CEO Randy Pitchford announced that the successful acquisition of the licence from the now defunct THQ was the only bid made for the franchise by a developer during the process, with the other two competing offers made by unnamed game publishers.

The studio will bring both Homeworld and Homeworld 2 to Steam, and while the team is working to update the graphics for a more modern look, those who purchase the game will also receive classic, unaltered versions of the 1999 and 2003 games. No release dates were confirmed. The news came as part of the company's PAX Australia panel, where it also revealed it would be bringing new downloadable content to its hit RPG, first-person shooter hybrid, Borderlands 2.

In April this year a Kickstarter campaign to create Homeworld 3 was unsuccessful after developer TeamPixel was unable to secure the game's rights.

Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition Review

It's been a long time coming, but the PC version of Mortal Kombat is every bit the focused, gruesome, and ludicrously over-the-top fighter as its console counterparts, not to mention the best looking. It pushes the boundaries of taste to the extreme with eye-popping attacks that see you ripping your opponents in half, impaling them on spikes, and stamping on their chests while their internal organs bounce around like tetherballs. And, thanks to the inclusion of all the game's DLC to date, it's jammed full of great new content and challenges.

If you've got some suitably beefy hardware the PC version of Mortal Kombat looks fantastic.

Most fighting games have some kind of narrative backing up the action, but few do more with it than bookend their arcade modes with a few cutscenes. Not so in Mortal Kombat's Story mode. Each fight you have is punctuated by in-engine cinematics, taking you on a journey that reboots the narrative from the first three Mortal Kombat games. The story picks up where Mortal Kombat: Armageddon left off, with Thunder God Raiden under attack from Shao Kahn, an evil emperor hell-bent on merging Outworld with Earth Realm--a process that threatens to end all life on the planet. It's all a bit cheesy, but the story fits well with Mortal Kombat's outlandish action.

That action makes a return to the single-plane 2D fighting that the series is known for, albeit with 3D models in place of digitised sprites. You're given the usual range of kicks, punches, and special moves to perform, as well as a combo system that lets juggle your opponents by knocking them into the air and following up with additional attacks. Pulling off such moves is tricky, but responsive controls and a simple control scheme mean that you're only ever a few hours practice away from an impressive combo.

If you're used to playing the likes of Super Street Fighter IV, though, then the feel of Mortal Kombat does take some getting used to, because the animation is less fluid. Moves don't string together as smoothly, so if you try to perform a combo that isn't in your character's repertoire, there's a delay between each attack, which feels jarring if you're not used to it. This doesn't make the game any less fun, though; it's just a different approach.

New to Mortal Kombat is a super meter, which gives you few more options during a fight. Most notable are devastating super combos called X-ray moves, which treat you to a slow-motion X-ray view of your opponent's bones and organs being crushed in an excessive display of blood and guts that even the most hardcore of sadists will appreciate. Skulls are smashed, spines are broken, and knives are thrust into eyeball sockets, all accompanied by flying shards of bones and chilling sound effects that crunch and splat just right.

On the surface, then, subtlety and sophistication aren't Mortal Kombat's strong points, but spend some time diving into the underlying mechanics and it soon becomes clear there's a lot of depth to its combat. For example, you can integrate X-Ray moves into your existing combos--nothing screams pro more than launching your opponents into the air, landing a combo, and then, while they're completely helpless, smashing their skull with your boot in glorious X-Ray vision. And while X-ray moves are powerful, they're not unstoppable; some can be blocked if they're not performed as part of a combo, and others can be dodged.

Forza 5 requires one-time online connection to Xbox Live

Purpose of connection is to download mandatory content to run racing title.

Xbox One game Forza Motorsport 5 will require a one-time internet connection to Xbox Live when first started, according to Turn 10, in an interview with IGN.

Studio head Dan Greenawalt confirmed that when players log in the first time, the game will download tracks, cars and Drivatar data. "Our production schedule is such that we are putting them in as late as possible and that means making them free as downloadable content on day one," he said.

Greenawalt added that the download is required content to run the title. "We basically have designed the game to work with all that content no matter how late [it] is coming in, in order to make the biggest game possible," he revealed during the interview. Xbox One owners can begin playing the game while parts of it are still being downloaded.

Microsoft changed its always-online policy for the Xbox One after its E3 press conference in June this year. The console, along with Forza Motorsport 5, will be available this November.

A group of League of Legends fans are teaming up to create a 2D fighting game based on the successful MOBA title for the PC called League of Fighters.

League of Legends creator Riot Games has approved the project, provided developer Instaburst does not sell the game.

As part of the announcement, Instaburst has created a trailer, which shows off Annie the Dark Child using her trademark moves from the MOBA.

Instaburst has promised the game will feature a single-player mode, as well as local and online multiplayer.

There is currently no release date set for the fan-made game. Interested parties can get more information at the developer's website.

Xbox One can play games while they're being installed

Microsoft confirms disc-based games will allow for play during install, but did not confirm a similar feature for Xbox Live downloads.

A Microsoft representative has told Polygon that the Xbox One will allow users to play games while they're being installed onto the console.

The company said that gamers can play disc-based games while they're being installed to the system's hard drive, with all disc-based titles requiring an install.

Microsoft has yet to confirm whether this applies to titles downloaded from Xbox Live.

In a recent interview, Microsoft's chief product officer Marc Whitten said that the company has not done enough to communicate the benefits of the Xbox One.

Xbox One is due for release this November for $500.

Deal With It - Steam Summer Sale, July 12th

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 13 Juli 2013 | 19.54

Cart Life is 66% off for $1.99, could possibly go lower before the end of the sale, but not super likely.  People wouldn't stop raving about this game at the Independent Games Festival.

Half Minute Hero is 75% off for $2.49, originally a PSP title, very much worth taking a look at.

Thirty Flights of Loving is 50%* off for $2.49, a short, but highly acclaimed indie title. *possibility of going lower if put on a flash sale before the end of the steam sale

Those are my quick shout outs.  So many titles worth looking at.

My pick of the day would definitely be FTL if you enjoy Star Trek or rogue likes.  Such a great game.

Ryan Davis Tribute

I still can't believe he's gone. It reminds me of Roger Ebert's death; someone I've known for a long time (though not personally of course); not seeing them on screen, and reading and listening to their work was something that I've just gotten used to. I still wonder what Roger Ebert would have thought about new films that come out, and I'm going to wonder what Ryan would have thought about games coming out soon, and it does sadden me that I won't get to hear what he thinks about next-gen when those come around.

I was anticipating the day GiantBomb did a video of them opening it and playing for the first time, with Ryan hosting. While I personally do not feel a deep sorrow due to not knowing him in person like his friends and family do, I do feel a certain loss from this because an important part of what I believe made GameSpot as well as GiantBomb -- two sites I go to most out of any -- isn't here anymore. My condolences go to his family and friends though; it's hard to imagine the feeling they must be going through.

Deus Ex: The Fall disables firing on jailbroken devices

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 12 Juli 2013 | 19.51

Deus Ex: The Fall restricting features on jailbroken devices; some users resorting to third-party software as workaround.

Deux Ex: The Fall, a mobile game based on Deus Ex: Human Revolution will not allow users who have purchased and installed the software on a jailbroken device to access all features of the game, according to posts on Reddit and Apple's iTunes App Store.

Prompted during the tutorial to fire your weapon, an error message informs players that "We are sorry but you can't fire on jailbroken devices," halting player progress to the rest of the game.

Customers who purchased the game for $6.99, and are running legally jailbroken devices, are displeased with the restrictive measures preventing them from playing. As a result, some users are now finding success running third-party applications that trick the software into believing it is running on a supported handset.

GameSpot contacted Square Enix seeking comment, but a spokesperson was unavailable at time of publication.

God of War: Ascension update to feature new multiplayer map and mode

Sony Computer Entertainment and developer Sony Santa Monica has announced a new update for its action title God of War: Ascension.

The 1.09 patch will debut a new one-versus-one mode called Bout of Honor. In this mode, two players fight against one another, best of seven rounds, without any chests, fountains and world weapons for assistance. The mode allows a player's magic to regenerate over time, though relics are disabled. This mode comes with four new maps: the Canyons of Kirra, the Chamber of the Flame, the Landing at Delos, and the Streets of Sparta.

In addition, a new four player map will also be available in the patch, a water-based stage called the Whirlpool of Alecto which features a giant leviathan. The developer has also made balancing tweaks and removed infinite combos.

SCE is asking all fans on PlayStation Network to post their feedback on the game's new multiplayer modes on the this thread from today until July 12. Players who participate will be rewarded with a free digital copy of the game's Mark of the Gods pack.

The 12.0 update introduces the Xinyi District map, which is the largest map created so far for the game. The map is specifically catered for the most popular mode in the game, conquest mode.

The update also introduces the Phantom pack, which includes Phantom-themed weapons and items. In addition, new graphical and cosmetic changes have been added which includes signature singe-eye AR displays and realistic shell ejection.

The game's dev-ops director Corey Facteau told GameSpot that the most-requested fix for the open beta was the removal of an exploit on the Korolyov Towers map. He added that Ubisoft will only release the game in its full state once they are completely satisfied with the quality of experience that they will give to players. "We will continue to make improvements and fixes in open beta until we are convinced that we are delivering the best experience possible."

Ghost Recon Online is currently in open beta officially in North America and Europe. Ubisoft did not state when Ghost Recon Online servers outside of those regions would be started. "Just like our launch in Poland," Facteau said, "our focus is to further expand with quality service worldwide, which includes localised service, closer servers, local customer support/community managers or localised payment methods."

For almost an hour that I watched him play it didn't bugged out once, and the map seems to never end which for someone that loves exploration (like me) its really awesome.

Microsoft reveals Xbox One prototypes

Microsoft has taken the wraps off some of the design process and prototype looks for its upcoming Xbox One console.

Xbox creative director Carl Ledbetter discussed the journey to the final look and feel of the console as part of Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference 2013, as reported by Polygon.

"We wanted to make it simple and elegant, and we wanted it to be crafted and tailored, so it's all about quality," Ledbetter said. "Using those principles, we started to design."

The process involved a team of 30 staff creating initial sketches, which were then turned into physical prototypes. Those models were then put in situ, placed in lounge rooms to give the team an indication of how the devices would look alongside other consumer electronics.

"The design you see here," Ledbetter said, showing the final Xbox One unit, "this is where we start to apply things like gloss and matte finishes. How does the vent pattern look? How does the brand come through the front? How do we make the font look high quality, just like the high-definition televisions in people's living rooms?"

The creative director also revealed that Microsoft created more than 200 prototypes for its new Xbox One controller, with users able to discern minute differences between different configurations. "We found that, when people put these in their hands, [they] could tell the difference between a 10th of a millimetre in size," Ledbetter said.

The Xbox One is scheduled to go on sale this November.

PS4 system architect: Indie trend to "accelerate"

Mark Cerny says that the upcoming console will set a proper business structure to support indie development.

The lead architect of the PS4, Mark Cerny, said that the numbers of indie developers developing for PlayStation platforms will grow at a fast rate.

During a Develop Conference interview in Brighton, Cerny said that the PS4 ecosystem was in an ideal position to speed up the trend. "I see it that on PlayStation 4, [indie development] trends are going to accelerate. I think we now finally have the proper business structure to really support indie development. And the PlayStation 4 overall user experience is also set up very well for indie; you can share screenshots and videos of the games and elevate their visibility within the gaming community quite easily," he said.

Besides being the lead architect for the PS4, Cerny was responsible for programming, designing, and producing legacy titles such as Marble Madness, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, and Crash Bandicoot. Sony's next generation console is due to launch before the end of 2013.

Microsoft suggests small businesses buy an Xbox One for the workplace

Alongside gamers and families, Microsoft is now saying the Xbox One would be a perfect device for small businesses.

In a public letter to small business owners, Microsoft director of consumer camp Marques Lyons has said many of the applications and features available to the upcoming next-generation console would be valuable to the networking and conferencing needs of offices.

"In fact, it's entirely justifiable to make the Xbox One a business expense," wrote Lyons. "The Xbox One, priced at $499, is an affordable option for small business owners, as there are many features built into the console that could help it rival even the most modest of video conferencing and networking platforms."

"What is being positioned as an excellent entertainment device can be just as enticing for you and your small business."

"Utilize Skype," continued Lyons, "and the power of group chatting, to have that collaborative exchange with clients and co-workers, no matter where in the world they happen to be."

"Utilize the size of that nice TV screen to see every smile and nod as your next great plan comes together. The Xbox One with Kinect, as a Skype provider, is just as capable as a PC with an attached/included microphone and webcam. The difference here is that Xbox One and Kinect gives you the open space to move, gesture, show examples, and see everyone more clearly."

Lyons also suggested a workplace mix of SkyDrive, Office Web Apps, and Kinect. "The SkyDrive app can let you easily access both photos and videos for viewing. If you're hosting a meeting at your office, don't worry about attaching a PC to the TV or using a projector. Store your videos in SkyDrive and then use the app to open that video. Do you have photos from recent travels or images showing details and diagrams? Open them with SkyDrive, navigate them with Kinect voice or hand gestures, be free from tethering that PC around."

"With SkyDrive via Internet Explorer, you can use it with the Office Web Apps to open that Excel spreadsheet or PowerPoint. Use the Kinect voice and hand gestures to navigate to websites. Now you're free of clickers and light pens to use your hands to for more expressive gestures."

Lyons also said a mix of SmartGlass and Wi-Fi Direct would be useful in the workplace, allowing workers to beam presentations onto a large TV screen and control them with a tablet.

Future applications might also be released to assist businesses, added Lyons. "The app story of Xbox One has yet to be written, therefore it is entirely possible to find apps down the road that could be of benefit for you and your business. With the processing power, snap mode, and connection to a large screen, that the Xbox One has, this device is capable of going from the 'break room' to the 'board room'."

The Xbox One will be released this November for $499/€499/£425.

Nintendo reinstates Super Smash Bros Broadcast at Evo 2013

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 10 Juli 2013 | 19.51

UPDATE:

Evo co-founder Joey 'MrWizard' Cuellar has just tweeted, saying Super Smash Bros Melee will be reinstated. "We won! Smash is back baby! #Evo2013 #hype," his tweet read.

An update has also been added to the story on Shoryuken. "'I've just received word from Nintendo that the Evo Smash Bros. Melee stream will be allowed to proceed. We will be restoring the original stream and tournament schedules. Obviously this is a huge [relief] for all of us here and we're thrilled that the world will get to see the best Smash players fight it out this weekend. Thanks to everyone online who supported both Evo and Smash."

Fans were upset about Super Smash Bros Melee's removal from the stream schedule earlier today, particularly after supporters helped raise almost $95,000 for charity earlier this year to see the game included in the tournament.

The original story is below.

Nintendo of America has denied organisers the rights to broadcast Super Smash Bros Melee gameplay as part of the Evo 2013 fighting game tournament being held in Las Vegas this weekend.

A news update on the Shoryuken website by a member of the event organisation team said, "Regrettably, we've just been informed by Nintendo of America Inc that we do not have permission to broadcast Super Smash Bros Melee for Evo 2013."

Persona 4 Arena and King of Fighters XIII will now take Super Smash Bros Melee's place, and while the GameCube brawler will still be included in the competition, its finals have been moved to Sunday at 2 p.m., and will no longer be streamed online for viewers.

Major League Gaming (MLG) faced similar restrictions from the Japanese company, when it was denied broadcast rights for Super Smash Bros Brawl ahead of its Orlando event in 2010.

In May this year, Nintendo began claiming advertising revenue for user-created YouTube videos that included the company's games.

Valve officially launches Dota 2

After two years in beta, Dota 2 has been officially launched by Valve as a free-to-play game via digital distribution platform Steam.

According to an announcement made on the official Dota 2 blog, the game currently holds the largest active community on Steam. Due to the size of the user base, Dota 2's official launch will be conducted in waves.

Players who are interested in picking up the free-to-play game can access it via the Dota 2 Steam page and join the launch queue, which is introducing new players in waves to accommodate anticipated server spikes.

Valve expects to start rolling out entry for new users "this week".

Dota 2 combines action and real-time strategy elements in multiplayer matches that pit teams of player-controlled heroes against one another. The game includes integrated voice chat and the option to play against AI-controlled heroes.

Valve's Dota 2 eSports tournament "The International 3" accrued a prize pool of more than $2 million due to contributions from the community. The prize pool will go towards the event, which is the third in a series of annual tournaments and will run from August 7-11 in Seattle this year.

Call of Duty: Ghosts to get second-screen multiplayer features

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 09 Juli 2013 | 19.51

Second-screen support will add key multiplayer features to Call of Duty: Ghosts, executive producer Mark Rubin has confirmed in an interview with Post Arcade.

The additional functionality is being built by Activision's sister team, Beachhead Studio, and while Rubin did not discuss specifics, he did confirm that the development team is wary of keeping the playing field level to avoid giving those who can afford a second-screen device an unfair advantage on the battlefield.

"We actually have a whole department--a whole studio, basically--wrapped around the idea of second screen. Our Beachhead group is doing a lot of work there. But a lot of it ties into multiplayer, and I can't talk too much about it now," he said.

While Activision's Elite platform originally launched as a paid service, before later becoming free, Rubin confirmed that Call of Duty players will not need to pay for an application to integrate their mobile experience with their home console; nor will it be monetised.

"It's free. And this is where you have to be smart on your design: You can't make it required, and it can't confer a massive advantage," Rubin said. "There's some balancing that needs to be done. You don't want it so the guy with an iPad has an advantage over other players in multiplayer just because he has the money to buy an iPad.

"But it will definitely be free, and it will be a companion. It won't be a revenue generator. It will be used to enhance the experience, but not offer any advantages," he said.

The executive also confirmed that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game will look near identical, are being developed in-house by the same Infinity Ward team, and that players who opt not to purchase Microsoft and Sony's new systems won't be left behind, saying, "the current-gen version is getting some graphical boosts and engine improvements, too."

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be available on November 5 for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PS4, and PC. Activision recently confirmed that fans who pre-order the game will receive a bonus multiplayer map, Free Fall, which takes place on a collapsing skyscraper.

Gearbox confirms more DLC for Borderlands 2

Gearbox Software president and CEO Randy Pitchford has confirmed that the most recent piece of downloadable content for Borderlands 2, Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, will not be the last created for the game.

Joining the Nerdist podcast (as reported by MP1st), Pitchford revealed, "We did a season pass for Borderlands 2, and the season pass was like, 'hey, if you buy the season pass, we would be doing four campaign add-ons and you can buy all four of them for the price of three, if you buy upfront'. So everyone was under the expectations that those would be the four DLCs and that's it.

"We are going to do more; we are going to do some other things. I don't have details exactly of it yet, 'cause we're not ready to announce what the other things are, but when the next campaign DLC comes, Assault On Dragon Keep [won't be] the end of it," he said. "We've got more stuff in the hopper that we're planning and getting pretty excited about. So if you're a Borderlands 2 fan, you don't have to be afraid that that's the end of it."

While no additional details were provided, Pitchford also announced that the studio is currently working on an original IP for next-generation consoles.

GameStop no longer accepting PS4 pre-orders 'due to high demand'

PS4 is no longer available for pre-order online; customers can opt to be notified if more stock becomes available.

US retailer GameStop is no longer accepting online pre-orders for the PlayStation 4, according to its website.

Listed as "currently sold out", the page prompts users to sign up to be notified if pre-orders are reopened for Sony's upcoming next-generation console.

A GameStop spokesperson told Game Informer that "due to high demand for the system, GameStop is not currently taking additional store reservations for the PlayStation 4".

Last month, a leaked internal GameStop memo suggested that the retailer would offer "unlimited pre-orders" until further notice.

PlayStation executive Andrew House previously revealed that Sony was boosting its sales projections for the PS4, following its positive showing at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).
